Modernising AHP Practice Placements in Scotland

Practice Placement Agreements (PPA) (click here for more information)

AHP Practice Placement Partnership Agreements (PPA) are signed between each university & NHS Board that provide AHP education. The agreements introduce consistent roles & expectations of everyone involved in placement provision. Each profession in each NHS Board has agreed to continue to provide a minimum number of placements. This now allows greater local annual planning co-ordination of placements across services. The PPAs also provides security for the future of the professions in Scotland.

Managing AHP Practice Placement Cancellations: Guidance (click here for more information)

The guidance provides a Scotland-wide approach to managing the risks of placement cancellation. This three-stage escalation process takes practice educators through the actions to necessary when a placement unexpectedly can no longer be provided as planned.

Quality Standards for Practice Placements (QSPP) (click here for more information)

The Quality Standards for Practice Placements (QSPP) support a learning environment within the practice setting so that learners and those supporting them understand their responsibilities in relation to practice placement learning. Quality practice placement experiences support the development of a workforce to deliver safe, effective and person-centred care (Quality Strategy 2010). The QSPP come in four sections. The Scottish universities & HCPC recognise the QSPP for AHP placements. Audit tools exist to enable self assessment.

Contact your local AHP Practice Education Lead (AHP PEL):

Practice Education Leads (PELs) are funded by NHS Education for Scotland, & are here to support AHPs within the health boards to provide high quality work-based education experiences to all learners. They work with a wide range of AHPs from health care support workers to senior AHP leads & will help them to develop & access a range of work-based learning opportunities. They also link closely with university lecturers to support Practice Educator Training and to maintain high quality practice placement experiences for AHP students.
