Practice Exercise #2:
Finding a recipe for chocolate chip cookies
- Go to the Google homepage.
- In the search box type the key words: recipe, cookie, chocolate chip
- Press “Enter” on your keyboard or click the button.
- Websites with recipes for chocolate chip cookies will be listed.
- Each of the blue underlined words is a link to a website.
- Sponsored links pay Google to display their website. These are often not the best web sites to choose.
- There are many, many pages to choose from. This search found 392,000 websites with these 4 keywords!
- If you do not see anything interesting on the first page of results, use the numbers on the bottom of the page to see more results.
Practice Exercise #3
- Look at the first link in your cookie search. This link will go to a website called popularcookierecipes.com
- Click on this link.
- You will go to this webpage.
- When you are looking at web pages, each time your cursor changes from a to a , you know that this is a link to another web page.
- If you accidentally click a link that you do not want, just use your button to go to the previous page.
- Try clicking the links to see other recipes.
- Try using the forward and back buttons on your toolbar to move between web sites.

Narrowing Your Searches
Let’s look for a restaurant in Seattle that serves fish and is on Lake City Way
- Go to the Google homepage.
- In the search box, type the words “restaurant Seattle”
- How many websites did Google find with these key words?
- In the search window, add the word “fish”
- Now how many websites are listed?
- Add the street name “Lake City Way” to your search. How many websites are listed?
- Using more keywords and more specific key words will narrow your search and help you find things more quickly.
