Finding Things on Google

Practice Exercise #2:

Finding a recipe for chocolate chip cookies

  1. Go to the Google homepage.
  1. In the search box type the key words: recipe, cookie, chocolate chip
  1. Press “Enter” on your keyboard or click the button.
  1. Websites with recipes for chocolate chip cookies will be listed.

  1. Each of the blue underlined words is a link to a website.
  1. Sponsored links pay Google to display their website. These are often not the best web sites to choose.
  1. There are many, many pages to choose from. This search found 392,000 websites with these 4 keywords!
  1. If you do not see anything interesting on the first page of results, use the numbers on the bottom of the page to see more results.

Practice Exercise #3

  1. Look at the first link in your cookie search. This link will go to a website called popularcookierecipes.com
  1. Click on this link.
  1. You will go to this webpage.

  1. When you are looking at web pages, each time your cursor changes from a to a , you know that this is a link to another web page.
  2. If you accidentally click a link that you do not want, just use your button to go to the previous page.
  1. Try clicking the links to see other recipes.
  1. Try using the forward and back buttons on your toolbar to move between web sites.

Practice Exercise #4

Narrowing Your Searches

Let’s look for a restaurant in Seattle that serves fish and is on Lake City Way

  1. Go to the Google homepage.

  1. In the search box, type the words “restaurant Seattle”

  1. How many websites did Google find with these key words?

  1. In the search window, add the word “fish”

  1. Now how many websites are listed?

  1. Add the street name “Lake City Way” to your search. How many websites are listed?

  1. Using more keywords and more specific key words will narrow your search and help you find things more quickly.
