Practice Chart – Due on the last Thurs/Friday of each month

Every month students are responsible for documenting their practice time at home. In order to be successful at playing tests and advancing through various levels of orchestra, practice outside of class is necessary. Practice time is very individual depending on schedules, focus and priorities. Some people have private lessons and practice several hours a week. Some students choose only to utilize class to learn their skill. All I need is for each student to let me know their efforts outside of school and for parents to acknowledge those efforts every month.

1.  Please check the overall category you would put yourself in this month for practice time/ambitions outside of class.

____ JULLIARD CATEGORY - CHAMBER ORCH/HSPVA INTERESTED/HYS MEMBER/PRIVATE LESSON TAKER/UIL/REGION EVENTS PARTICIPANT: Recommended practice amount is 7-10 hours per week

____BIG FISH IN SMALL POND CATEGORY - CHAMBER or SINFONIA/ADVANCED ORCHESTRA MEMBER INTERESTED IN ADVANCING TO CHAMBER*PRIVATE LESSON TAKER: Recommended practice amount is 4-6 hours per week

____SELF MOTIVATED CATEGORY - INTERMEDIATE/SINFONIA/ADVANCED ORCHESTRA MEMBER INTERESTED IN MAINTAINING A SCORE OF 90 OR ABOVE ON PLAYING TESTS IN CLASS: Recommended practice amount is 2-4 hours per week.

____SURVIVAL MODE CATEGORY - ANY ORCHESTRA MEMBER NOT WANTING TO FALL BEHIND IN CLASS : Recommended practice amount is 1-2 hours per week. Most beginners will start here even with private lessons.

____KEEP DREAMING CATEGORY - ANY ORCHESTRA MEMBER WHO DOES NOT PRACTICE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL

2.  Please record your practice times during the month of September – (calendar is on the back). Label however many minutes or hours on the days that you practiced.

3.  Have your parent sign your practice record. It’s simply an acknowledgement. I’m not looking for people to be in the JULLIARD category for an A on this. Obviously that’s not realistic for many students. This is simply a way for me to collect data and to better inform people of matching their ambitions with the necessary work ethic. Completion of steps 1-3 and turning in on time will receive an A.
