DIRECTORS:
Kim Schoepke, CDA, and Director of Student Affairs: Kim graduated from ProvoCollege in 2001 with a diploma degree in Dental Assisting. She has been a dental assistant for 6 years and attends annual continuing education courses to maintain her excellence in the dental field. She has been teaching for the last three years.
Eliza Norris, EFDA, and Licensed Instructor by Oregon Dept of Education / Admissions Representative /Co-Director of Education: Eliza graduated from Provo College in 2001 with an Associate’s Degree in Dental Assisting. She has been a dental assistant for five years since graduating, an office manager for two, and has been an adjunct faculty instructor for ProvoCollege for an additional three years. She has served on the Provo College Advisory Board for 6 years and has accompanied the Hirschie Smiles Foundation to Guatemala on humanitarian trips.
INSTRUCTOR:
Cassie Dresser,EFDA, and Licensed Instructor by Oregon Dept of Education: Cassie graduated from Apollo Dental Assisting School in 1996. She has been dental assisting in lead positions since that time. Cassie is a wonderful motivator and helps keep the students engaged and interested.
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants may be admitted upon satisfying the following requirements:
- 18 or older;
- Possesses a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalency certificate.
ADMISSIONS AND ENROLLMENT PROCESS:
Applicants must:
- Submit high school transcripts, GED or recognized equivalency;
- Submit valid identification;
- Submit completed and signed enrollment documents; and
- Pay 20% of tuition as down payment at the time of enrollment.
We recommend that you register early, as classes fill quickly.
PROGRAM INFORMATION:
Dental Assisting- this diploma program prepares graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet entry level training requirements. The Dental Assisting Program is a 91 clock hour program. The program is offered 7 hours per week, for 13 weeks. The number of weeks may vary when holiday breaks are included. Holidays are reflected in the school calendar.
Each week of the course, a new subject and subsequent lectures and homework will be given from the text “Modern Dental Assisting” by Torres and Elrich.
Upon completion of the course, graduates are prepared to take the Dental Assisting National Board ( tests, which are required by the state of Oregon to become a Dental Assistant for certain functions. The examinations are only required if an assistant chooses to become certified, though most offices hiring would look for these certifications.
The DANB organization assigns the location to take the following tests: Radiation Health & Safety Exam, Oregon Clinical Radiologic Proficiency Exam, Oregon Basic Dental Assisting Exam, and the Oregon Expanded Functions- General Dental Assisting Exam. These tests are administered by DANB representatives, and each has a fee associated to be able to take the exam. Please see an instructor or for more information.

TUITION AND FEE POLICY:
Tuition $3995.00
Books and Supplies $120.00
Total Program Cost $4115.00
CPR Training is included in tuition. Upon enrollment, students will be issued textbooks and scrubs. There are several payment options, please call us to set up a consultation appointment. $823.00 (20% down) is required at the time of enrollment. The remaining balance of $3292.00 is due the first day of class.

FRIDAY CLASS SCHEDULE:
8:30am-3:30pm, with a half hour lunch. Times for lunch will vary depending on lecture and clinic, though they will generally be at the 1:00pm hour.
GRADING SYSTEM:
A=100-94, A-=93-90, B+=89-87, B=86-83, B-=82-20; C+=79-77, C=76-73, C-72-70, D+=69-67, D=66-63, D-=62-60, F=59 and below.
A student’s academic standing is expressed by a grade point average (GPA) and is computed as follows: A=4.0; A-=3.7; B+=3.0; B-=2.7; C+=2.3; C=2.0; C-=1.7; D+=1.3; D=1.0; D-=0.7; F=0.0, unsatisfactory performance and achievement; W=0.0 Withdrawal.
SATISFACTORY PROGRESS STANDARDS FOR ACADEMICS & ATTENDANCE:
Students must maintain satisfactory academic and attendance progress while enrolled in training. Each student is evaluated and is given a written progress report at the 6 week and 13 week marks. If the student’s cumulative grades or attendance drops below 70%, he/she will be put on probation for 2 weeks. If at the end of the probationary period, the student has not maintained attendance or passing grades of 70% or above, he/ she will be terminated (except for extenuating circumstances). Progress records are kept by the school until course grades are transcripted. Academic transcripts are maintained in the student file.
CREDIT FOR PREVIOUS TRAINING:
As our trade program is so short and specific, there is no credit given for previous training.
DIPLOMA:
A diploma shall be awarded to each student who completes all the program requirements.
PLACEMENT:
Placement assistance is available. Doctors in search of staff are referred to our graduates, as well as a list of local websites for job listings. Training includes interviewing skills and resumepreparation. No guarantee of employment placement is made or implied.
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT:
Courses are taught in a functioning dental office, Dixon Creek Dental. As such, all of the equipment, instruments and materials used in the office daily are presented in the course. Our facility covers 2,000 square feet and includes the most modern and up-to-date dental equipment available today. Lecture will be held in the adjacent building for the 1-2 hours of morning lecture. The main facility is handicap accessible, and lecture will be moved to that facility should any disabled wish to complete the course. Clinic will be held within DixonCreekDentalCenter each week. Lectures include PowerPoint presentations with digital video and audio components, and instructor training. The textbook is: Modern Dental Assisting, 9th Edition, Torres and Elrich, and accompanied by Modern Dental Assisting, Dental Instruments, 9th Edition, Torres and Elrich.
HOURS OF OPERATION:
8:30am-3:30pm, classes are held on Saturdays.
HOLIDAYS AND OTHER DATES OF IMPORTANCE:
Practical Dental Assisting of Oregon observes all major holidays. There is generally a one week break between course end and start dates.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Students shall be required to attend all school days from the date of enrollment to graduation in accordance with the program requirements and enrollment contract.
TARDIES:
Tardiness is irresponsible and unprofessional. It is not acceptable behavior and students arriving late for class more than three times will be placed on probation. If attendance does not improves during the probationary period, the school may suspend or terminate enrollment. The school’s policy on suspension or termination of enrollment will be followed.
LEAVE OF ABSENSE POLICY:
A request for a leave of absence must be submitted in writing. The request will state the reason for the leave and length of time being requested. The school may grant approval at its discretion when circumstances for the leave are not related to illness, accident, or a death in the family. A student on leave is considered by the school enrolled. No charges or fees are assessed during an authorized LOA. Students not returning to school at the end of their LOA will be withdrawn/ dropped from the school.
MAKEUP WORK:
Missed classes may be made up by special invitation with the instructor to review missed lecture materials plus homework assigned.
STUDENT CONDUCT POLICY:
All students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner befitting a dental office at all times. Respect, courtesy, and sensitivity are behavioral practices expected among students and instructors throughout the educational program. Appropriate behavior includes regular and punctual attendance. Students are to conduct themselves in a professional, legal, and cooperative manner that is not disruptive, harassing, intimidating, dangerous to themselves or others, and that does not hinder the progress of other students in the school. Students are expected to maintain classrooms, equipment, and the clinic floor at a level comparable to professional industry standards. Swearing and other forms of verbal abuse will not be tolerated by any student toward staff or student peers, and may be reason for dismissal. Dress standards for the course are a lab jacket, scrubs, and tennis shoes. Smoking is strictly prohibited within the teaching facility. Smoking within the confines of the teaching facility will be grounds for dismissal without compensation. Students may smoke off premise (meaning outside the boundaries of the physical parking area surrounding the building.) We highly encourage students who smoke to enter a smoking cessation program with their private doctor or dentist.
Deviations from these standards may result in disciplinary action.
DISCIPLINARY PROCESS:
Warning notices may be issued to students who are in jeopardy of probation, unsatisfactory progress, or termination. Lack of response to warning notices may result in probation, suspension or termination.
Type of discipline violation:
- Academic (student will receive warning(s) when the cumulative GPA is below the minimum 70%.)
- Attendance (student will receive warning(s) if they miss one or more classes.)
Type of notification:
- Verbal(Student is notified verbally of noncompliance with policy)
- Written (Student is notified in writing of non compliance with policy.)
- Probation (Student is given written notice identifying the length of probation, specific area(s) of deficiency, and is scheduled to meet with a school representative. The student is informed of the date/ time/ place of meeting. It is the student’s responsibility to meet with the school representative to discuss the reasons for, and terms of probation. If necessary, the school and student may prepare a written agreement documenting the corrective action plan. A copy is given to the student; the original is maintained in student file.)
- Suspension (Student has failed to comply with previous warnings and is suspended from attending school for a specified period of time. Return to school is contingent upon student meeting the school’s identified standards.)
- Termination (Student is permanently withdrawn from school)
Students who have an academic violation are responsible to schedule a meeting with the instructor so that additional homework and make-up work can be assigned. Students must complete the assigned work for additional points given.
Although the school has established a progressive notification process, the authority is retained to impose immediate probation, suspension, or termination, when appropriate.
STUDENT GRIEVANCE POLICY:
Students aggrieved by actions of the school should attempt to resolve these problems with appropriate school officials. Should this procedure fail, (and if the allegation asserts that the school has violated an Oregon law), students may contact the Oregon Department of Education, Private Schools & Specialized Programs, 255 Capitol Street NE, Salem, OR 97310-0203 or phone (503)947-5716.
STUDENT GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:
Students should attempt to resolve grievances in the following manner:
- Meet with the classroom instructor to discuss problem.
- If not resolved, meet with the school director to discuss problem. The decision of the director shall be final, unless the complaint is a violation of state or federal law or administrative rule.
- If the complaint cannot be resolved after exhausting the school’s procedure and the complainant alleges a violation of Oregon Revised Statutes or Oregon Administrative Rule, the student may file a complaint with the Oregon Department of Education.
RE-ADMISSION POLICY:
Those wishing to cancel for approved illness or personal reasons may resume their course of study in the next class series with no penalty and may repeat the already completed sessions if desired. Those students whose grade average is below 70% will not receive a certificate but will be allowed to retake the entire course (if desired) at a reduced fee of $2500.00.
