Abstract --We are witnessing a total and fundamental paradigm shift from staid anchored landline phones and computers to a totally untethered, anywhere-in-the world instant communication. New generation wants “always on “connectivity, constant network presence and immediate satisfaction. We are seeing total abandonment of priordecade’s refined habit in favor of whole new approaches to not only technology and work but life itself.

Computing, Internet, Wireless. These disruptive changes have forever changed landscapes like Railways, Airlines and Telephones before them. Wireless enables mobility, Mobility changes all around us. Consumer applications are simple examples of mobility built into everyday products including cameras, e-mails, books, weather reports, TV, maps that are creating new values.

The present article delves upon various aspects of Mobility alongwith trends in mobile phones which have become personal assistants. Life comes to a total stop once we lose our mobile phone as all our important data including telephone directory is stored in these small gizmos. Today nobody keeps a pocket diary as the phone is our diary for day-to-day work.

  1. INTRODUCTION

A core principle of any efficient empire is mobility. Whether you are at war or at peace, some emphasis on creating a transportation network will almost always serve you well. To that end roads and navies (to give mobility on land and water) are the most efficient and reliable of the mechanics offered.

We already live in a highly mobile world that would seem foreign to a visitor 20 years ago. There are about 700 million phones in India and about 95 percent are mobile.

More than 100 percent in Metros and about 30 percent in rural areas own a mobile phone. It is estimated that in a fixed environment only 28 percent calls get completed. The mobile phones have made it possible to overcome this handicap.

About 10 percent of the subscribers have cut off their land lines. Our phones are no longer tethered to a location and devices we carry are becoming more than just a phone. It is digital diary, an ipod, an alarm clock, a games console and on the topmost is a camera. More and more applications arebeing added day by day. It is estimated that the camera phones are more than 10 times the cameras being sold.

More phones are e-mail enabled. We can check our e-mails anywhere and send text messages anywhere from anywhere. The mobile phone has become a mobile office, you can work from anywhere even during a conference.

The mobile phone also gives a high speed web browser giving information on all topics, weather forecast, stocks and even newspapers. So it is able to give all the features and facilities which you are able to see at a fixed location.

It is estimated that in a fixed environment only 28 percent calls get completed. The mobile phones have made it possible to overcome this handicap.

Three Laws which have given Power to the mobility are

Metcalfe’s Law:The value of any product or service increases with mobility where value of mobility is realized by increased availability. This is also called Metcalfe law. Applying this to our networks we can easily say that value of a network increase with increase in its users.

It works in two ways

a)The mobility makes the product available for more time to use and thus its utility increases like mobile camera built in the phone.

b)The second use is the contextual relevance like Internet and web browsing.

Moore’s Law: The Moore’s law which states that processing power of a device is doubling every year and cost is becoming less is force behind the mobile revolution

Bacon’s Law: Bacons Law states that Knowledge is Power and Mobile phones are really a power in today world

II.TRANSFORMATIVETECHNOLOGIES
What can businesses do via mobile technology? The easier question to answer is "What can't they do?" Not much, thanks to a few technologies you will be hearing more about later in the year:

4G: The mobile industry geek brigade will want to corner you and try to explain the differences between 4G LTE and 4GWiMAX, two technologies being used in network upgrades.

AKGEC JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY, Vol.2,No.1

But the important thing for businesses is that they will be able to enjoy bandwidth bursts up to 12 Mbps--which is why everyone is suddenly talking about video apps.

Femtocells: No more dropped calls inside your office when you have a femtocell. It's like having a cell tower next to your desk--but without the broken ceiling, the noise or the giant concrete base. A rapidly dropping price tag (now between $50 and $100) makes femtocells ideal for small business.

Wi-Fi: Everyone knows about Wi-Fi, but one of the most interesting trends for the rest of 2011 and beyond is the phone as Wi-Fi hot spot. Smart phones integrated with the capability, are making it more attractive and efficient.

VoIP: Voice over IP is another not-exactly-new technology that's new to mobile. Alternative voice apps, such as Skype Mobile and Google Voice, might be close to finding a place in everyday mobile communications. For business users, it's all about cheaper calling, but these apps wouldn't be ready for prime time if mobile devices and mobile networks weren't ready to fully leverage the Internet.

III.WIRELESS: A BOON TO MANKIND

Wireless is the force behind all the developments in mankind. Marconi an Italian inventor made use of the wireless signals to send messages across distances. This was used extensively in the ships movements to send SOS messages in case a ship is in danger.

In the year 1912, the sinking Titanic could save about 700 lives as its SOS signal could reach a nearby ship and it rescued 700 passengers from drowning. It is also said that the ships used to close their networks at night otherwise more lives could have been saved, as some more ships were sailing near the titanic but could not receive the message.

The power of mobility can be seen from the fact that it took 21 years for mobile technology to reach its first billion mark. In comparison, it took 125 years for the fixed phones to reach that figure. The second billion came in just 3 years for mobile phones whereas it is yet to reach this figure for the fixed phones.

Those companies which build mobility in their product and services redefine the rules of competition the industries increasing the odds that they can win.

Here’s a quick fact to demonstrate the power of the consumer when it comes to today’s mobility. Amazon announced that over the course of the preceding 12 months, the company sold $1 billion worth of goods directly through mobile devices. That is one very substantial revenue number! Can anyone

doubt that mobility is transformative and that it is already transforming business in strategic new ways? Theconvergence of services in the device has made the device more powerful.

IV. SEVEN STEPS TO ENHANCE POWER OF MOBILITY

There are seven steps which enhance the power of mobility.

Digitize.:Digitizing of the networks enhance the data speed and reliability. Also digitizing of the data is necessary in today’s environment. It is a critical step in capturing the power of mobility.

Connect: Connect means the reach of the connectivity. Internet is the best example of reach of connectivity as it can be accessed from anywhere in the world.

Evaluate: Evaluating any product requires a deep understanding of your customer’s desires and frustrations. How and when and where do they want to use the product or service? How well your current offers match those desires?

Limit: There are four factors around which you should consider limiting the mobilization of the product, service. These are Wireless technology, Network provider, Geography and Activities.

Position:Select your target market, customers and applications. So choose well.

Protect:To provide Protection against Data securityfinancial exposure and third party claims.

Learn: Learn from the customers and act accordingly.

V. MOBILE APPLICATIONS

We have long preached the power of the mobile app – or more accurately we’ve spent years evangelizing the notion that the mobile app is the key to delivering on a mobile experience that will captivate your work force, your customers, and your customers’ customers. As the Amazon revenue number points out, we’ve now finally reached a state of mobility that no longer requires evangelizing but rather now requires delivering. And this is very exciting indeed.

The real power of mobility manifests itself directly through the power of the mobile app, and the interactions that take place directly between users and their mobile devices. We call this AppThink.

Beautifully built apps that capture the user’s imagination, that take advantage of rich UIs that deliver the ability to delight

users – these are the essential keys to successful mobile deployments. We summarize all of this by simply saying that

everything mobile is driven by the power to ‘deploy happiness.’

Some Apps for realizing the power of Mobility are:
Messaging, GPRS, music, video etc but do you know that your java enabled set will be able to do almost all the functions which a personal computer can do.

For taking you online, a number of mobile browsers are available. For going through your files in memory card, and going through memory card in your friend’s device via bluetooth, file zipping, unzipping and other functions. Blue FTPby Medieval is the best.

A lot of demo and adware versions are available of the software in mobile application sites like Getjar, Mobile9 etc.

For reading pdf documents also there is a way, you can get a large amount of pdf readers like Adobe Reader, Mobile Pdf etc.

You can even chat with your friends in Yahoo Messenger, GTalk and facebook messenger with the help of applications like sHmessenger, GoTalkMobile, eBuddy etc. .For downloading all videos found in youtube, metacafe etc, you can check out the site vuclip.com but nowadays most service providers are charging for the download from vuclip.

Mostly Youtube’s Application will be provided in high end phones and all. If not just log in to m.youtube.com from the default browser of your phone and enjoy!

VI. MOBILITY IN MEDICINE

We are daily seeing that mobility to the patients by means of wheel chairs and ambulances is a boon to the mankind. There are mobile dispensaries where the doctor can visit remote locations and where the patient is unable to go to the doctor.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic for a doctor to be able to remotely scope out the vital signs on a patient and tell that patient exactly how they are doing? In a sense, it brings the idea of the old ‘doctor’s home visit’ (yes, doctors did do this once) back, and allows physicians to raise their level of personal interaction with patients without the need for non-existent or undesirable travel time by either.

Relative to the exciting world of smart phones, iPads, and mobile applications, the topic of ‘Paperless Pharma’ might certainly seem to be a rather retro and uninspiring topic. But let’s stay the course on this – the discussion over what it really means will literally reshape the Pharma business in coming

years. Underlying the obvious, there are some ideas that will pop up here that are significant to Pharma’s future.

Going paperless, in and of itself, offers the usual tactical productivity gains: cost reductions, better auditing and the like. But it is hardly transformational when looked at in this tactical way. This is merely making a paper process digital.

What we need to do is look beyond the tactical, and discover what becomes strategic in making the move to a paperless Pharma world.

From the medical practitioner’s perspective, a doctor armed with data reflecting such information as how the body of patients react to all kinds of stimuli and medications over time, will be far better able to manage the care of those patients.

Such monitoring will also provide key leading indicators of potential health issues and possible disease far earlier in time (long before a patient is likely to display overt symptoms), and will allow doctors to proactively inform patients of such problems and issues, and to begin early discussions of treatments or other ways to resolve those problems and issues.

Unless a person is under constant monitoring this data would not otherwise be knowable. For pharmaceutical and medical device companies, a doctor will be able to verify efficacy, discover interaction issues, and provide valuable information to allow for the fine tuning of medication dosages to actual use.

This alone will allow life sciences companies to make significant new improvements and will drive entirely new developments and improvements in both medical devices and drugs. But these efforts have begun, and mobility has been – and will continue to be – the key driving force to making it happen.

VII. REALIZING POWER OF MOBILITY -A SINGAPORE EXAMPLE

Singapore has a mobile population penetration rate of 139.6% (as at May 2010) so the government responded quickly to the changing consumption pattern and uses the opportunity to extend its range of services to better reach out to the public that is taking up new media experiences with staggering speed. The decision to embrace advanced technology for presenting a refreshing layout of their portal and enhanced features for easy navigation is therefore more than comprehensible.

The launch of the iPhone app can then be regarded as the next step to keep pace with the increasingly demanding ubiquity, connectivity and content flowing across different devices that supports ever-greater interactivity and convenience.

AKGEC JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY, Vol.2,No.1

Over the years, with the rapid changes in infocomm technology, people have become more sophisticated users of the internet. The government therefore has gone beyond delivering electronic services and information online, to also providing a more holistic online experience.

Best is that besides providing news, events, feedback and search features, new portal is updated throughout the day. The portal offers, as mentioned, dynamic user-friendly features such as new media interactive tools to better engage and involve the users and is improved in design and usability. Users with different Internet browsers and devices can enjoy conveniently a consistent andhassle-free quality experience.

receives an average of 7.5 million views per month, based on Google Analytics’ tool, which provides insight on website .Within the first week of the launch itself, the iPhone app registered as the Top 3 under News/Free application category (behind The Straits Times and Channel NewsAsia) on App Store and garnered 8,931 iPhone app downloads as at July 12, 2010.

If you explore, you can find millions of other ways of doing some work you usually do only in PC in your mobile phone…
Its always convenient to carry your mobile phone always, it can be your personal manager in daily life and also a great help.
If it had life, it’ll undoubtedly be your best friend who knows you pretty well and keeps your life moving.
