Area / no
of areas / Supervisor * / Types of rock/ work / Logistical details, Constraints
Swinburn. Central Otago, 15km east of Ranfurly / 1-2 / Dave Prior/Christina Riesselman / Sediments, volcanics and Schist. Mapping with focus on relationships of volcanics to sediments and Schist basement. / A few km from accommodation. Bicycle would work. Easier with motorized transport.
False Islet, Cannibal bay and Surat Bay. Catlins. Coast 6km east of Owaka / 1-2 / Dave Prior/Christina Riesselman / A variety of sediments affected by folding and faulting. Mapping coupled to sedimentary logging. / No transport needed once in area. Accommodation options within walking distance.
Nevis Basin, High Central Otago / Must be 2 / Dave Prior/Christina Riesselman / Sediments, Schist and faults. Mapping out major contacts and collecting data to unravel deformation history / High, relatively remote area. Appropriate only to a team with some back-country experience. Motorised transport essential.
Cornish Head, near Waikouiati / 1 / Christina Riesselman / Sediments, including diatomite, volcanics, landslide / Field area 30 mins north of Uni.
St Bathans area, central Otago / 2 / Dave Craw / Sediments, Schist and faults. / Car to get to area- maybe public transport. Car or bike useful in area.
Mount Charles – behind Allans Beach / 1 / James White / volcaniclastic and other volcanic rocks / not tide dependent
Purakauni Inlet +/- Potato Pt / 1 / James White / volcaniclastic and other volcanic rocks / Car, public transport or bike.
Portobello Peninsula / 1 / James White / volcaniclastic and other volcanic rocks / Car, public transport or bike.
Kakanui (North Head, South Head) / 1 / James White / pyroclastic rocks in marine sed r / Car or maybe public transport.
Pigroot Creek / 1-2 / James White / pyroclastic rocks and lavas in Otago Tertiary sedrx / Car probably necessary
Sandymount digital Mapping / 1 / Steven Smith
Ray Marx / Dunedin Volcanic Group and sediments. Structural analysis of contacts. Mapping to be done digitally. / Car or maybe public transport/bike.
Ocean View/Brighton digital mapping / 1 / Steven Smith
Ray Marx / Dunedin Sequence rocks. Structural analysis. Sedimentary Logging. Mapping to be done digitally. / Car or maybe public transport/bike.
Purakanui Bay, Catlins / 1-2 / Chris Moy / A variety of sediments affected by folding and faulting. Mapping coupled to sedimentary logging. / Transport needed to Catlins and to northern part of study area. Good camping at Purakaunui Bay.
Derdan Hill, Mt. Baldie, and Karitane Peninsula) / 3-4 / Candace Martin/ Chris Moy / Sediments, volcanics and Schist. Mapping with focus on sedimentary sequence. / Field area 30 mins north of Uni. Suggest car pooling with others or public transport.
Tokarahi-Awamoa-Earthquakes / 2-3 / Ewan Fordyce / Cenozoic sedimentary rocks and fossils / Car essential
Could pair with someone working on Schist
Kakanui South-Aorere Point-Bridge Point / 2 / Ewan Fordyce / Cenozoic sedimentary rocks and fossils, overlying volcanics / Car essential
Could pair with someone working on volcanics
Shag Point / 1 maybe 2 / Ewan Fordyce / Cretaceous-Cenozoic sed rocks and fossils / Car essential
Could pair with someone working Horse Range area
Anywhere in the Maniototo-East Otago area; parts of the Rail Trail an option / 1 / James Scott / Mapping the relationships of Otago Schist, Tertiary sediments and Miocene volcanics / Car probably necessary. Bike for some areas.
Tokarahi (Dip Hill) Sill, NothOtago / 1 / Mike Palin / Gabbroic sill intruded into Cenozoic sedimentary rocks. Detailed mapping with focus on internal structure of sill. / No transport needed once in area. Campground within walking distance. Must have taken GEOL 264/364.
Kawakaputa Point, Southland / 1 / Mike Palin / Diorite with mafic enclaves and dikes. Detailed mapping with focus on possible relations between enclaves and dikes.. / Car needed. Campground at Colac Bay, <5km east. Tides may restrict access. Must have taken GEOL 264/364.
Otago Shelf and upper Waitaki Submarine Canyon / 1-3 / Andrew Gorman / Seismic boomer data and co-incident multibeam imagery, sediment samples.
No onshore field mapping. Stratigraphic and structural mapping based on seismic data and multibeam / Will involve a 2 or 3 day excursion on the Polaris II in mid-March as part of a data collection effort for a PhD project. Lab work to analyse data will require about a week’s effort.
Dowling Bay / 1 / Marco Brenna / Mapping of sedimentary/volcanic succession, petrographic descriptions / Public transport, car, bicycle
Tomahawk Beach / 1 / Marco Brenna / Mapping of volcanic deposits, petrographic descriptions / Public transport, car, bicycle, low-tide will help
