Dear Mr A B Sample

To help people save more for their retirement, the government now requires employers to enrol their workers into a workplace pension scheme. This applies to those who aren’t already in one and who:

·  earn over £10,000 a year (£833 a month)

·  are aged 22 or over; and

·  are under State Pension age.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

The government’s aim is for more people to have another income on top of the State Pension when they come to retire. The full State Pension in 2018–2019 is only £164.35 a week for a single person. Very few pensioners complain about having too much money and so having something other than the State Pension could help make your retirement more comfortable.

Employers are enrolling their workers automatically into a scheme to make it easier for people to start saving.

DEFERRED ENROLMENT DATE

As permitted by legislation we have deferred the date we will enrol eligible employees into our company pension scheme to 1 April 2018. If you satisfy the criteria listed above you will automatically be enrolled into the company pension scheme.

We will pay into the scheme every month. You have the right to join the company pension scheme before the automatic enrolment date if you want to. If you wish to do so, contact our HR department in writing by sending a letter. This must be signed by you. If you wish to send it electronically then it must contain the phrase “I confirm I personally submitted this notice to join a workplace pension scheme”.

WHAT IF I AM NOT ELIGIBLE TO BE AUTOMATICALLY ENROLLED?

If you are not eligible to be automatically enrolled, and you are not already a member of a qualifying scheme, you can still choose to join the company pension scheme.

If you have earnings of more than £5,876 a year then as well as your own payments to the plan we will also make a payment. You will also receive a payment from the government in the form of tax relief on your payments.

If you do not have earnings of more than £5,876 a year then we won’t make a payment into the plan, but any payments you make will receive a payment from the government in the form of tax relief.

If you wish to join the scheme then you must do so in writing and pass this request to our HR department. This must be signed by you. If you wish to send it electronically then it must contain the phrase “I confirm I personally submitted this notice to join a workplace pension scheme”.

WHAT IF I AM ALREADY A MEMBER OF A QUALIFYING SCHEME?

If you are already a member of a qualifying scheme, you will not be automatically enrolled into the company pension scheme.

If, for any reason, you stop being a member of a qualifying scheme, you must notify our HR department. If you satisfy the criteria for being automatically enrolled into the company pension scheme, we will do this the following day.

WHERE CAN I GET FURTHER INFORMATION?

If you have any questions about your enrolment or contribution levels, contact our HR department.
