Awards Ceremony To Be Held At University of Houston Bauer College Financial Symposium

Overview

Texas Council on Economic Education (TCEE), in conjunction with UH Bauer College Financial Symposium to be held at the University of Houston on April 14, 2012 during Houston MoneyWeek 2012, will sponsor a poster contest. Using the rubric below for a campus based competition, each school may enter their top 5 posters from each grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) that address the theme, Managing Your Money. Kindergarten through grade 12 students who live in the greater Houston metropolitan area are eligible to enter the poster competition.

Deadline Date and Requirements

To be eligible for the poster contest, the completed Student Poster Registration Form (page 6) and the Poster Contest Rubric (attached on page 7) along with the winning posters from each campus must be received on March 26, 2012as specified below. The Student Poster Registration Form (page 6) should be securely attached to the top right back of the poster and the rubric (page 7) to the top left back of the poster. The sponsoring campus sponsor will need to provide the Campus Poster Registration Affidavit.

Delivery March 26, 2012

The winning posters from each campus need to behand delivered on March 26, 2012 at one of three Houston locations. A campus staff person needs to deliver the winning posters to one of the locations below during the times specified.

Poster Pick-up

Winning posters can be picked up at the University of Houston, Melcher Hall on April 14, 2012 at 5:00 by the teacher, administrator or family member of the artist. All other posters will be picked up by a school official on April 16 at the same library location where they delivered the posters to be judged.

Poster Criteria

  1. All posters must be the student’s original work and should reflect an original design or concept of the student. No copies by hand, electronic or mechanical device of any previously published poster will be allowed. No previously published photograph, or other previously published material, or copyright protected art, copyright protected photograph or other copyright protected material will be allowed. Magazine cut-outs, newspaper cut-outs or internet clipart are also examples of what are not allowed.
  2. Colored pens, pencils, crayons, paints, or a combination thereof, may be used.
  3. Posters must be NO LARGER THAN 22” x 28”. Posters can be constructed on poster board, foam board, cardboard, or similar surface as long as they are flat. Wood is an example of a surface that is not acceptable. The posters can be smaller than 22" x 28" but not larger than 22”x28”. 3D posters are NOT acceptable. The artwork is to be two dimensional.
  4. Content in the design must be school appropriate. (Example items that will not be accepted: posters with profanity or of a lewd nature, with satanic, violent, nude or suggestive portrayal).
  5. The Student Poster Registration Form with signatures must be attached securely to the top back right of the poster. The rubric needs to be affixed on the back left top corner with the student’s information completed.

The following, without exception, will cause disqualification of artwork:

  • Late poster: it is the responsibility of the Campus Contest Coordinator to ensure that posters arrive in time for judging. Please do not ask for extensions.
  • Posters that do not have Student Poster Registration Form and Poster Contest Rubric affixed on the back.
  • Posters containing commercial products. (The following are acceptable commercial products that can be used: colored pens, pencils, crayons, paints, or a combination thereof, poster board or acceptable 2 dimension surface for art). Examples of commercial products that are not allowed include clip art, magazine and newspaper pictures and text.
  • Posters containing photographs and artwork created by other persons or entities are not acceptable.

Poster Assignment

In keeping with the theme, Managing Your Money, students can use the concepts below to help guide their artwork.

Grades K-2 :

•How can you save for something you want?

•How can people provide for food, clothing and shelter?

•How does work help us provide for goods and service?

•What are examples of waysyou can earn, spend and save money?

•What are examples of how to be smart about spending and saving money?

•Why is it important to manage your money?

•What are the benefits of creating a budget to show the money you earn and the money you spend?

Grades 3-5:

•What are examples of ways of earning, spending and saving money?

•How can consumers build a positive budget when dealing with scarcity of money and resources?

•What are ways for consumers to live within their budget?

•What are examples of ways to be smart about money?

•Why is it important to manage money?

•What are the benefits of creating a budget?

Grade 6-8:

•What ideas do you have for saving for major purchases: college, car, special events?

•What are good money management behaviors?

•How can you building a positive credit rating?

•What are ways you can be smart about money?

•Why is it importantto manage your money?

•What are the benefits of creating a budget?

9-12

•How and why do I need to manage my money for my first year in college?

•What are examples of positive money management behaviors?

•What are ideas on how to be smart about money?

Judging

The following criteria will be considered when a poster is judged. All posters will be judged based on the expectations of artistic ability that is appropriate for that gradelevel.

Entries will be judged by a group of volunteers who understand the concepts involved in the theme, Managing Your Money.

Winners will be contacted through their teacher no later than April 6, 2012. They will be invited along with their parents, teacher, and school administrator to attend the Financial Symposiumopening program to receive their awards at 1:00 pm on April 14, 2012. They will be asked to stand by their posters from 2:30 till 3:00 at Melcher Hall at the University of Houston to answer questions that participants of the Financial Symposium may have.

Awards

The top three poster artist winners for each grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) will:

  1. receive a savings bond:

First Place: $75

Second Place: $50

Third Place: $25

  1. be invited to the opening program on April 14 at 1:00 pm at Melcher Hall of the Bauer School at the University of Houston. The winning student’s teacher, campus administrator, and parents are also invited to attend.
  2. have the poster featured at the University of Houston Bauer School’s Financial Symposium on April 14, 2012 between the hours of noon and 5:00 pm.
  3. have the poster featured in the Financial Symposium Calendar.

Campus Judging and Delivery of Artwork

Each campus will be responsible for judging all student entries for that campus and determining the top five winners for each grade band. The posters will be judged using the attached rubric. Please make copies for the campus to use in judging the posters. Although these completed campus judging forms will not be submitted to TCEE, it is recommended that the campus keep these in case there are questions asked.

The campus will be responsible for delivering the following on March 26 to the specified locations on page 1:

  1. a maximum of five winning posters per grade band
  2. Campus Poster Registration Affidavit
  3. Student Poster Registration Form completed and affixed to the right back of each poster
  4. Poster Contest Rubric affixed to the left back of each poster

Campus Display

Campuses are encouraged to display all of the poster entries on their campuses.

I understand that:

  1. each campus will choose the top five winners in each grade band category. Judging will be based on the attached Managing Your Money rubric.
  2. the five campus winning posters for each grade band will be delivered by a school representative and picked up according the contest guidelines.
  3. photographs and photocopies of the entries will be taken by TCEE and will remain the property of University of Houston and the Texas Council on Economic Education.
  4. while the posters will be returned to the students, UH Bauer School and the Texas Council on Economic Education retain the right to reprint the posters as calendars and in other formats (billboards, cards, marketing pieces, etc.).
  5. the signature of the student, parent, teacher, and principal denotes their understanding of the rules and the admission of compliance of those rules.

I understand that it is the responsibility of the campus representative to deliver the posters on March 26 and retrieve the posters on April 16 at the Houston Public Libraries listed on the TCEE website. For the twelve winning posters, the adult family member listed on the registration form can pick up his/her student’s artwork on April 14, 2012 at 5:00 pm at Melcher Hall on the University of Houston campus. If the poster cannot be picked up at this time, the school representativewill pick up the poster at on April 16, 2012 at the location listed on the TCEE website and on page 1 above. I understand that TCEE and UH Bauer School are not responsible for lost or stolen posters. I also understand that if my poster wins an award, TCEE and UH Bauer College have the right to display the image during the Financial Symposium on April 14, 2012, and photograph and reproduce the image for future purposes.
