Hours 21 per week (with possibility of additional hours)

Locations of work: London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Lewisham,

Greenwich and East Kent.

Summary

Advocacy for All has 2 IMCA and RPR contracts, 1 in East Kent and 1 in South East London. We need RPR’s to work in each area.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is a law about making decisions and what to do when people cannot make some decisions for themselves. Individuals might be able to make some decisions but not be able to make other decisions. When a person cannot make a decision this is called lacking capacity.

Sometimes a person lacking capacity may want to do something that is not in their best interest and they may need preventing from doing this. This is called a Deprivation of Liberty.

A Person’s representative is there to support the relevant person during their time in hospital or care home while they are deprived of their liberty.

We require RPR’s to visit the person regularly to make sure their interests are being upheld and safeguarded.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • to be the RPR for a person with a Deprivation of Liberty order
  • to visit the person on a regular basis
  • to maintain a large caseload
  • to ensure that all discussions and meetings concerning the client are focused on their needs and aspirations and they are involved in meaningful and appropriate ways
  • communicate in such a way that the individual has a clear understanding as to what is happening to them
  • work with all individuals in a way that promotes dignity and respect
  • maintain and accurately record information in line with the Data Protection Act
  • ensure that all relevant legislation, particularly those relating to Equal Opportunities and Disability Discrimination are being consistently applied and promoted. Ensure that the key principles of Rights, Independence, Choice and Inclusion are upheld
  • to undertake any other duties as reasonably requested
  • to work in line with Advocacy for All’s Policies and Procedures and ensure compliance with equality and diversity

Person Specification

Post: Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR)

Knowledge/experience (training will be provided)
  • working in advocacy or a related area
  • working with a range of people from different backgrounds and working with vulnerable people
  • working with community and social issues
  • working knowledge of current relevant legislation to include the Mental Capacity Act (desirable)

Ability
  • to empathise with people’s life experiences
  • to be non judgemental
  • to manage appropriate boundaries in the advocacy relationship
  • to work on own initiative to identify and access relevant information
  • to work sensitively with different groups in local communities
  • to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when dealing with people at different levels
  • to plan and organise time efficiently and effectively

  • Have a full, clean driving licence and use of car to carry out the duties of the post

Communication
  • excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills
  • research and report writing skills and the ability to analyse, interpret and present data
  • Microsoft software applications to include Word and Excel
  • good problem solving skills
