GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POST:

A teacher of English as a second language to groups of KS3 students at a variety of levels: generally Beginners through to Intermediate (group sizes are generally from 6 to 12 students).

Working hours are school hours as specified.

Duties & Responsibilities:

To deliver English language teaching, using and adapting department schemes of work and resources (2013-14: McGraw-Hill, Language for Learning/Thinking/Writing; Pearson Rapid Plus, etc) to suit the various groups.

To deliver a number of alternative lessons a week to small groups of students who have been identified as requiring additional specific support with certain skills, using tailored lesson plans and resources.

To assess and track the progress of the individual students, using provided assessment materials and progress trackers, and help manage the movement of students between groups as their skills develop. To help identify student’s individual targets and assist them to achieve them.

To work as part of the EAL team, developing teaching strategies that will address pupils' needs including collaborative work between pupils;to provide or develop differentiated resources to ensure pupils' access to the curriculum and development of EAL; to enable pupils with EAL to develop and transfer skills from one topic/subject to another; to provide or develop visual materials and prompts to support pupils' learning.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Adapting and adding to lesson plans using the resources and planning material made available, while analysing the language demands of the lesson and identifying and planning for language learning opportunities within the lesson.
  • Developing and identifying opportunities to draw on pupils' prior experience and first language.
  • Assisting in preparing the learning environments and the materials used therein.
  • Assisting with the management of student behaviour to ensure a constructive working environment.
  • Responding to and monitoring students doing the work that has been set.
  • Supervising entry and departure of students in accordance with school policy.
  • Recording and reporting attendance at lessons in accordance with school policy.
  • Reporting back as appropriate using the schools’ agreed referral procedures on the behaviour of pupils during the class and any other issues arising.
  • Dealing with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the schools’ policies and procedures.
  • Following school policies and procedures especially those relating to chid protection and health and safety.
  • Respecting confidential issues linked to home/students/teacher/school work and to keep confidences as appropriate.
  • Any other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties and responsibilities/grade of the post as defined, subject to the provision that normally any changes of a permanent nature shall be incorporated into the job description in specific terms following consultation with the recognised trade unions.
