POST:Perinatal Support Worker

SALARY:£24,000

HOURS:35

CONTRACT: 2 year fixed term contract funded by Comic Relief

LOCATION: Liverpool based but will cover Merseyside

RESPONSIBLE TO:Director

PURPOSE: Supporting pre and post natal asylum seekersand/or refugees to reduce the risk of depression during and after pregnancy.

This post is restricted to women only due to the nature of the role. (Schedule 9 (part 1) of the Equality Act 2010)

Duties:

One to One Support

  • Raise awareness of mental and other health issues that could increase the risk of depression when pregnant.
  • Offer one to one support to women most in need.
  • Provide person centred support and develop a care plan to assist women to achieve their identified goals.
  • Identify women that would benefit from support or education with parenting, life skills, ESOL, mental and physical well-being.
  • Help service users improve confidence and independence
  • Refer and/or signpost women to other support or health services including counselling.
  • Undertake home visits and appointments and accompany women when required.

Services

  • With the Health and Wellbeing Support Co-ordinator run a weekly pre and post natal group.
  • Plan and deliver health workshops.
  • Increase access to and knowledge of other health and wellbeing services.
  • Develop doula support by creating a peer support group of accredited doulas

Volunteers

  • Recruit, manage and train health and wellbeing volunteers and university placements
  • Recruit, train and manage doula support volunteers

Safeguarding

  • Be a safeguard lead
  • With the Director review and update safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Support staff with safeguarding queries and facilitate staff and volunteer safeguarding training.

Case management

  • Manage a caseload.
  • Use Lamplight case management systems to record all data and statistics and maintain a file management system.
  • Monitor and evaluate the service and report on findings

Raise awareness .

  • Network with other organisations to ensure good working partnerships, improve access to services and increase MRANG’s profile.
  • Attend and speak at events on behalf of MRANG.
  • Be involved in health advocacy, communicate with external health professionals and share learning.

Person Specification:

  • Have a recognised qualification/s relevant to perinatal health such as qualified midwife, mental health nurse, health visitor or a relevant health qualification that provides expertise in this area.
  • Have experience of supporting pre and post natal women.
  • Understand how to recognise risks of depression and suggest appropriate coping strategies.
  • Experience of planning and running support groups and workshops.
  • Be able to develop and manage a care plan.
  • Possess the ability and knowledge to become an accredited doula and be able to develop a doula support programme with volunteers.
  • Have the skills and knowledge to evaluate the project and report on the outcomes and difference the project has made.
  • Be able to manage a complex caseload using a case management system.
  • Have the level of safeguarding knowledge and experience to be a safeguard lead.
  • Work well with colleagues to share learning and help improve and increase the work of and outcomes for the Health and Wellbeing programme.
  • Have the ability to plan work for, train and supervise volunteers.
  • Be able to drive and have use of a car.
