CALL TO CONFESSION – Liturgist Christine Duryea

A summary of Jesus’ gospel in less than 10 words might be: We have all strayed, but God loves us anyway. This is the heart of the message we proclaim. We are made right with God not by our efforts, but by the love of God made known in Jesus Christ. Let us boldly and honestly admit our need for this amazing and healing love by confessing our sin.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION – Congregation

O God, you continue to offer us freedom from the bondage of the past. You would release us from the guilt that immobilizes us. You challenge us to let go of the judgmentalism that chokes our love for others. You call us beyond the self-pity that keeps us standing still. You hold before us a vision of new life that challenges our complacency and sets fire in our souls. Help us, O God, to embrace your future, and thereby receive the courage to let go of the past. This we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen

SILENT MEDITATION AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our custom is to join hands for the Lord’s Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE – Liturgist

We are assured that God will abundantly pardon. Jesus proclaimed good news that God seeks to heal our broken humanity and is at work in all creation. God promises a restored human community in Christ. As we wait for the fulfillment of God's promise, we commit ourselves to work for fuller and deeper community in our own time and place.

Reel Theology – Sunday Night at the Movies– Groundhog Day (1993) – 5 p.m.

Sent to cover the annual appearance of world-famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, a self-centered TV weatherman unleashes his bitterness -- and soon realizes he's doomed to repeat Groundhog Day until he learns that his actions can affect the outcome. The film follows the classic formula for a fable or morality tale. It elicits fine performances from Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, plus many notable supporting characters. It is Murray training for his role as Saint Vincent that we saw last month.

We meet today at 5 p.m., at the home of Doug and Dale St. Denis for warm hospitality, fine nibbles, and a great conversation about the film. Join us! 1504 Parkview Place.

The Heart of Christianity, by Marcus Borg – Beginning Tues., July 7

Jesus’ followers have diverse opinions about what he taught, who he was, and what the central tenets are of the Christian faith. To many folks it is truly confusing. Marcus Borg’s book surveys what Jesus taught and how he anchored his teaching in the Hebrew prophets. It comes as a surprise that the religion bearing Jesus’ name sometimes ignores Jesus’ “good news.”

We begin our study July 7 at 9 a.m., meeting at El Tapatio Restaurant, 260 Palm Ave., Imperial Beach. Get your copy and begin reading. Find out what Jesus is REALLY about!

THE FIRST TESTAMENT LESSON Psalm 130

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We commit ourselves to witness to the way of Jesus and the mighty acts of God. To be moved to participate in healing in our city and throughout the world. To believe that freedom is for all or none, to care so deeply that we want to change what is unjust and hurts another human being. To discover that liberation is at the heart of the gospel. To pry off the blinds of habit from our eyes. To be sensitive to those who suffer. To reconcile that which divides. To reactivate integrity in our public systems, as well as in ourselves. To see mission globally without denominational labels. To realize anew the tremendous need for evangelism. To risk through faith in the midst of insecurity, and to trust in the final triumph of good.

THE HYMN RESPONSE Paul E. Hoffman

There is nothing in the heav’ns above, nor in hidden depths of earth

that can keep the Savior’s love from us, for by his sinless death

God’s Son has conquered ev’ry foe. There is nothing left to fear.

For God’s love, God’s love is always near.

THEY’LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS

We are one in the spirit, we are one in the Lord,

We are one in the spirit, we are one in the Lord,

And we pray that all unity may one day be restored.

(REFRAIN) And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,

Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love,.

We will walk with other, we will walk hand in hand,

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand.

And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land. (REFRAIN)

We will work with each other, we will work side by side,

We will work with each other, we will work side by side,

And we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride. (REFRAIN)

All praise to the Father, from whom all things come,

And all praise to Christ Jesus, His only Son,

And all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one. (REFRAIN)
