POST:Lunchtime Supervisor

RESPONSIBLE TO:Headmaster

LOCATION:Fairfield Preparatory School

The role of the Lunchtime Supervisor is to ensure the safety and security of pupils during the midday break, 12.00 – 2.00 p.m. and encompasses the following responsibilities:-

  • Supervision of pupils in the Dining Hall, playground and school premises, including the toilets and cloakrooms.
  • Ensuring that children walk along pathways, particularly when going to the Dining Hall, from the playground and vice versa.
  • Dealing with children who misbehave, cautioning them to ensure the maintenance of good order.
  • Speaking to the pupils in a reasonable manner, making clear to the pupil why their conduct is unacceptable.
  • Referring pupils who do not respond to cautioning and who persistently misbehave to the Deputy Head/Head of Pre Prep
  • Patrolling the playground and the pathways.
  • Maintaining the sitting time schedule, ensuring that the pupils reach the Dining Hall at their allotted time.
  • Ensuring that the children do not leave the premises without the knowledge of the School Office.
  • Providing basic first aid and accompanying children to the Medical room.
  • Dealing with emergency situations such as fire drills.
  • Endeavour to help children in the development of play activities.
  • Facilitating the sensible use of play equipment.
  • Being aware of the school rules.

In the event of wet lunchtimes, supervisors should patrol their predetermined school areas, making regular visits to classrooms.

Reception Supervisors

  • Each supervisor is responsible for their own class.
  • Collecting Reception children from their classroom and take them to lunch.
  • With the Reception staff, serve lunch to the children and supervise the children in the Dining Hall.
  • Taking children back to their classrooms after lunch and then on to the playground where the children are supervised.
  • Towards the end of playtime, taking the children back into their classroom to prepare for rest/quiet reading.

Year 1 and 2 Supervisors

  • Collecting Year 1 children from their class and take into the Dining Hall for the first sitting.
  • Helping with the supervision of Year 1 children in the Dining Hall.
  • Supervising the cloakroom when the Year 1 children come out of lunch and then supervising the children on the playground.
  • Collecting Year 2 and any Year 1 second sitting children from the playground and take them into the Dining Hall.
  • Supervising the children on the playground.
  • Refer any incident relating to accidents and behaviour issues to the class teacher or Head of Pre-Prep.

The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom she/he is responsible, or with whom she/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the school’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school she/he must report any concerns to the school’s child protection officer or to the Headmaster/Headmistress (if different).
