LOCUM DENTAL OFFICER

Fixed Term for 1 year Maternity Cover

Part-time30 hours per week

Salary Scale - £38,095 - £57,142 per annum pro rata

NHS Forth Valley seeks to appoint Locum Dental Officer to join our motivated team of practitioners in delivering high quality dental care to our local population.

You will have the support of dedicated and highly qualified dental nurses and will work in modern dental surgeries with networked clinical software facilities.

We would hope to support the successful individual in developing experience in areas of clinical interest within the Service.

NHS Forth Valley is the largest employer in the area, with approximately 8000 staff from a wide range of professional and support occupations. Currently, services are provided in one acute hospital, four community hospitals and fifty-six health centres. Acute Services are based in purpose built 860 bedded Forth Valley Royal Hospital, which opened in 2011and provides inpatient and outpatient services for a population of approximately 310,000.

Job Description – Locum Dental Officer

Job Title: Locum Dental Officer (Fixed Term)

Grade: Locum Dental Officer

Hours: 30 hours

Contract: Part time fixed term

Responsible to: Clinical Director, Public Dental Service

Salary scale: £38,095-£57,142 (pro rata)

Purpose of Job

  1. Provision of dental care within the terms of the NHS General Dental Service (Scotland) Regulations and the Statement of Dental Remuneration as amended.
  2. Provision of comprehensive oral care including to priority groups and safety net patients. Care must be provided from clinics, domiciliary and custodial settings. Keeping up to date in advancements in clinical techniques.
  3. Provision of treatment under oral, inhalational, intravenous sedation or general anaesthetic in appropriate settings and with appropriately trained staff.
  4. Participation in emergency in and out of hours services in NHS Forth Valley as required by the Public Dental Service’ contractual arrangements. There may be a requirement to work weekends and public holidays as part of providing emergency clinical cover.
  5. The post holder will be expected to participate in the National Dental Inspection Programme.
  6. The post holder will be expected to participate in audit and in the clinical governance of the service.
  7. The Locum Dental Officer may have to undertake other duties appropriate to the post and grade as determined by the Clinical Director of the Public Dental Service.
  8. The post holder will be expected to work flexibly within NHS Forth Valley and contribute to further planning and development of the service.

Communications and Working Relationships

  1. The Locum Dental Officer will liaise and collaborate with other members of the Public Dental Service in NHS Forth Valley.
  2. The Locum Dental Officer will supervise and direct the work of any dental nurse providing assistance to the Locum Dental Officer liaising as necessary with the senior dental nurses or Dental Nurse Manager who has management responsibility for dental nurses.
  3. The Locum Dental Officer may be expected to be involved in the clinical teaching of trainee dental nurses and CT1’s.
  4. The Locum Dental Officer may have access to a dental hygienist/dental therapist.
  5. The Locum Dental Officer will liaise and collaborate with other Health Care Professionals within the NHS and other agencies in regard to patient care including Scottish Prison Service, Local Education Authorities.

Qualifications

The Locum Dental Officer must be a graduate in dentistry and must hold a full registration with the General Dental Council. At least two years post graduate clinical experience is desirable.

Continuing Education

The Public Dental Service will expect the Locum Dental Officer to take part in Staff Training sessions and yearly in work planning and the appraisal process.

Library facilities are available in the Postgraduate Centre at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert.

This job description will be subject to discussion and review on an annual basis within the appraisal process.

Timetable

Eight clinical sessions per week at various community and custodial care health centres within Forth Valley.

Pre-Employment Screening

Criminal Convictions - Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme

The Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme has replaced the previous disclosure arrangements for people who work with vulnerable groups. The duties of this post require the post holder to undertake regulated work with children and young people (individuals aged under 18 years) and / or protected adults (individuals aged 16 or over who is provided with (and thus receives) a type of care, support or welfare service).

The post holder will be required to be a member of the PVG Scheme and to consent to NHS Forth Valley obtaining a Scheme Record or Scheme Record Update, as appropriate. Any failure to disclose convictions could result in the withdrawal of an offer of employment.

Occupational Health Screening

This post involves the performance of exposure prone procedures and therefore the successful applicant will be required to produce evidence of their Hepatitis B and C Immunity Status prior to appointment and to undergo satisfactory health screening.
