  1. PROGRESSION AND ASSESSMENT

First Year of the Programme (PGCE)

3.1In order to be eligible for the award of the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), students must achieve 60 credits from the 3 core modules (general and subject-specific professional studies), in addition to achieving the approved standard in ‘Practical Teaching 1 and 2’ modules (in their specialist subject) plus satisfactory completion of externally assessed computerised Skills Tests in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.

3.2For a candidate in receipt of this PGCE to be recommended by the University to the General Teaching Council (GTC) for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), the candidate must also have met any statutory additional criteria of the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) current at the time of recommendation and detailed within the Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status.

3.3In order to progress from Phase 1 to Phase 2, students must achieve the approved standard in Practical Teaching 1 module in their specialist subject (DTP902, PEP904 or DTP906 as appropriate).

3.4Students who fail to achieve the approved standard in Practical Teaching in Phase 1 or 2 may be re-assessed on one occasion only, by means of a further period of practical teaching. Partner Schools will be asked to provide a placement for such re-assessment but this cannot be guaranteed. The responsibility of the Teacher Education Unit in this respect is to endeavour seriously to find a suitable placement for this practice in a PartnerSchool, or other school willing to provide the period of extra training according to the secondary Partnership Agreement. If, after four attempts at separate schools, a suitable placement is not secured, the University's obligations in this matter are deemed to have ceased.

3.5Any candidate seeking re-assessment in practical teaching will be required to meet the costs of re-examination together with a contribution wholly or in part to the costs of the University's transfer of funds to the PartnerSchool, as required by the Partnership Agreement.

3.6A student may be required by a PartnerSchool to withdraw from a school placement, either because of failure to make adequate progress in the development of practical teaching skills, or because of contravention of the Conditions of Service or Code of Professional Practice of the School. Students who withdraw from a school placement, including those required to withdraw by the Partner School, may be determined by the Programme Board either to have failed in practical teaching or to have abandoned their studies, as appropriate.

Years 2-4 of the Programme

(a)have passed both practical teaching modules in their specialist subject (i.e. DTP902 & DTP908 or PEP904 & PEP910 or DTP906 & DTP912)

(b)have met the ‘Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status’ (DfES & TDA, 2007) including passing externally assessed computerised QTS Skills tests in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT

(c)have obtained an overall average of typically at least 60% across all three core modules and no less than 55% in each core module (i.e. DTP900 or PEP900 plus DTP901 & DTP907 or PEP903 & PEP909 or DTP905 & DTP911).

3.8Students are restricted to one 30 credit module during Year 2 of the programme – ‘The NQT and Induction Year’ module.

3.10In order to be eligible for the award of the MSc in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), students must obtain 180 credits - 60 credits from the 3 core modules on the PGCE course (general and subject-specific professional studies), 30 credits from ‘The NQT Year and Induction’ module, 30 credits from ‘Advancing Pedagogic Knowledge’ (for students offering Design and Technology or Science) or a selected module from the MSc in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy (for students offering Physical Education), and 30 credits from the ‘Practitioner Research’ module and the ‘Teaching Research Project’ module worth 30 credits (all students).

3.11A student cannot progress to the ‘Teaching Research Project’ module until s/he has accumulated 120 credits.
