Needles:
US size 9 (5.5 mm) straight and 8 (5mm) straight and 35 or 55" circular
6 Removable markers
Abbreviations:
BO-bind off; beg - begin (ning), CO-cast on; k-knit; K2tog-knit 2 stitches together; PU-pick up; p-purl; rep-repeat; RS-right side; St(s)-stitch (es); WS-wrong side; yo-yarn over.
Gauge:
16 sts and 24 rows = 4" in Reverse Herringbone Faggot Stitch pattern, blocked.
For correct sizing, be sure to work a gauge swatch.
Note: To prevent color pooling the vest body was worked with 2 balls of yarn, alternating every 2 rows, carry the unused yarn loosely up the side.
Back
Using Size 9 needles, CO 74 (82, 90, 98, 106, 114, 122) sts. Knit 1 row. Begin working in pattern as follows:
Reverse Herringbone Faggot: (Multiple of 4 sts plus 2 selv sts)
All rows: K1, *K2, yo, K2tog; rep from * to last st, end K1.
Work patt until piece measures 25 (25, 25, 24 1/2, 24, 23 1/2, 23)". Lengthen or shorten as desired, keeping in mind that when worn the length increases approximately 4-5". Additional yarn may be required if increasing length.
Armhole
Place removable marker at beg and end of row, to mark beg of armhole. Work in patt until armhole measures 9 (9 1/2, 10, 10 1/2, 11, 11 1/2, 12 1/2)". Knit 1 row. BO all sts.
Using removable markers, mark first 26 (30, 34, 34, 38, 42, 46) sts for right shoulder, 22 (22, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30) sts for back neck and last 26 (30, 34, 34, 38, 42, 46) sts for left shoulder.
Fronts (make 2)
Using Size 9 needles, CO 26 (30, 34, 34, 38, 42, 46) sts. Knit 1 row Begin working in pattern as follows:
Reverse Herringbone Faggot: (Multiple of 4 sts plus 2 selv sts)
All rows: K1, *K2, yo, K2tog; rep from * to last st, end K1.
Work same as for back. Sew shoulder seams.
Armbands
Right armband: RS facing, using size 8 (5mm) straight needles; beg at right back armhole marker PU 98 (102, 106, 110, 114, 118, 122) sts to right front armhole marker. Work in 2 X 2 rib.
Left armband: RS facing, using size 8 (5mm) straight needles; beg at left front armhole marker PU 98 (102, 106, 110, 114, 118, 122) sts to left back armhole marker. Work in 2 X 2 rib.
2 X 2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts plus 2 sts):
Row 1 (WS): P2 *K2, P2; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2 (RS): K2, *P2, K2; rep from * to end of row.
Rep rows 1 and 2 until band measures 1 3/4 (1 3/4, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2)". BO in rib.
Front band
RS facing, using size 8 (5mm) circular needles, beg at lower right front edge PU 192 (200, 204, 204, 204, 204, 208) sts to shoulder seam, PU 22 (22, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30, 30) sts across back of neck to next shoulder seam, PU 192 (200, 204, 204, 204, 204, 208) sts to lower left front edge. �406 (422, 438, 438, 438, 438, 446) sts. Work in 2 X 2 Rib until band measures 3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4)". BO in rib.
Finishing
Sew side seams. Weave in ends.
