Position:Youth development specialist PAY GRADE: 4

SCOPE:To develop and administer youth development programming designed to advance elements of YWCA Richmond’s mission including but not limited to prevention of domestic and sexual violence, empowering women and girls, and advancing racial equity.

DUTIES: Essential Functions: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the functions listed:

Partnership Development

Seek out membership to community workgroups that pertain to mission elements and youth development. Participate in and represent YWCA at community workgroups, coalitions, and subcommittees. Assess relevance of community partnerships to identify best fit for YWCA and youth programming. Develop partnerships with other youth serving organizations to increase educational and program opportunities.

Empower RVA Teens Program Management

Maintain strong relationships with program participants and caregivers to ensure participant retention. Update teen peer facilitation training curriculum to meet standards for best practice. Facilitate eight-week training program for new teen peer educators. Recruit new participants for program on a yearly basis. Build relationships with youth-serving organizations and school administrators to recruit students and access programming opportunities. Plan and execute monthly meetings for Empower RVA Teens program. Coordinate and oversee special events for program participants. Empower teen peer educators to facilitate speaking engagement opportunities throughout the region. Manage data and program outcomes for grants and tracking purposes.

Youth Community Programming

Develop curriculums that addressneeds for prek-12th grade pertaining to mission elements. Participate in continuing education surrounding prevention programming to maintain best practice in programming. Advertise and promote prevention programming as best practice to youth serving organizations and school systems. Facilitate prevention programs around issues of bullying, healthy relationships, dating violence, and sexual assault. Seek out partnerships to advance prevention programming in the Central Virginia region. Manage data and program outcomes for grants and tracking purposes. Collaborate with Director of Advocacy and Outreach to determine areas of need for community youth related to mission elements. Develop and implement new youth programming informed by community need and mission elements.

General Department

Contribute to achievement of department goal of increasing service utilization an advancing YWCA Richmond’s mission at the community level.

This job description is intended to outline areas of responsibility of the Youth DevelopmentSpecialist. It is not a complete list of tasks that are included in the position. Youth DevelopmentSpecialistis encouraged to use their experience and creativity to effectively implement the goals of this position. Weekly meetings are held with the Director of Advocacy and Outreach to discuss new ideas or challenges.

Supervision: This position reports directly to the Director of Advocacy and Outreach and serves at the YWCA Downtown office located at 6 North 5th Street, Richmond, VA 23219.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or comparable experience
  • Coursework or comparable experience in program design, evaluation, and management
  • Knowledge of social and racial justice environment and organizations of Richmond
  • Experience working in youth development, preferably with teenagers
  • Experience with collecting and interpreting data
  • Working knowledge of a computer and programs such as Microsoft and Google suite.

  • Ability to connect with youth of varying ages
  • Close attention to detail with strong organizational skills
