Human Resources Benefits Technician II

Position: UAA Human Resource Services Benefits Technician II

The University of Alaska Anchorage, Human Resource Services is seeking an HR Benefits Technician to join the Benefits Team. Duties:

General: Responds to employee and dependent questions on UAA benefits. Prepares for, and conducts bi-weekly New Employee Benefits Orientation and annual Faculty Benefits Orientation. Prepares new employee benefits packets. Conducts benefits briefings for potential new hires. May meet one-on-one with new hires regarding benefits eligibility and enrollment.

FMLA: Serves as Family Medical Leave (FML) request intake person and initial approver. Maintains medical leave data base, including reports, processing, and distribution of documents and notifications. Sends out approval or denial notices in a timely manner and reports to Benefits Manager or Sr. Benefits Specialist. Maintains FML files in accordance with HIPAA and standard privacy practices. Appropriately documents files with all communications regarding each FML request and its status. Responsible for meeting timelines, tickling FML actions and following through on requirements. This position is responsible for making independent decisions regarding approval of medical leave, advises staff/faculty regarding FML, and may conduct FML training for supervisors.

Exit and COBRA Processing: Conducts exit interviews regarding benefits. Submits COBRA eligibility information using the current Universityprocess in accordance with timeline requirements. Develops and updates the UAA COBRA notification process and administers documents to provide notice of eligibility to current COBRA vendor, insuring all eligible employees receive COBRA information and application forms within the legal timeline. Sends out appropriate exit packet to all terminating employees. Maintains appropriate logs.

Retirement Verifications: Approves and processes all distribution requests for retirement funds for UAA employees and retirees. Researches and completes retirement verifications for UAA employees retiring with one of the University Retirement plans, or the State of Alaska PERS or TRS retirement plans.

Miscellaneous other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of general office procedures, general business communication, operation of standard office equipment, information management, project management, interdepartmental coordination, understanding general department and organizational policies. Ability to interpret policy and regulations.

Required Experience:

Requires experience in a similar position. Knowledge of health & welfare plans, payroll, and human resource systems and electronic spreadsheets. Analytical and problem solving skills required.

Requires experience presenting in front of small groups.

Typical Education or Training:

College coursework in human resources, accounting or business, and one year of technical human resources experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Salary: $19.15/hour minimum
