B.  Position Summary:

The Library Technician (c1) works closely with the media librarian and others in a provincial service to acquire, manage and evaluate educational media programs for the advanced education system in British Columbia. This service also provides source cataloguing for all media programs, tracks licensing, organizes an educational media showcase and manages related projects.

C.  Functions and Duties:

1.  Performs duties related to acquiring, managing, and evaluating media programs for advanced education systems in British Colubmia:

·  Assists in the provincial service to provide media rights acquisitions services.

·  Assists with patron and vendor enquiries concerning media rights acquisitions.

·  Performs basic reference searches, refers subject searches to the Media Librarian.

·  Assists with cataloguing procedures, including bibliographic searching; derived cataloguing; tracking and proof-reading original cataloguing to comply with provincial and AEMAC standards; liaising with cataloguer; entering all cataloguing into DBTextWorks, Dynix.

·  Liaises with private duplicating lab and fulfilment service staff on a regular basis.

·  Assists in developing procedures for keeping track of rights and masters acquisitions; maintains a variety of acquisitions files.

·  Assists with previewing, evaluations and nominations of new media titles, including the development of databases to track the nominations process.

·  Produces a variety of documents, lists and reports extracted from databases and spreadsheets.

·  Starts up and maintains a variety of financial and documentary records; sets up budget spreadsheets; monitors financial information.

·  Produces requisitions, enters purchase orders into Banner financial system for media rights acquisitions and other purchases, as directed.

·  Receives and processes all media purchases and previews; performs data entry; updates and manages databases in DBTextWorks and records in Dynix.

·  Assists in verifying and interpreting contracts for accurate entry onto databases of program information.

·  Communicates with patrons and others involved in this service using electronic mail, FAX, mail and phone.

·  Edits and updates Web pages associated with the service.

·  Assists with the organization of an annual trade show.

2.  Performs related duties/projects as required including:

·  Types a variety of products using word processor.

·  Performs receptionist duties.

·  Maintains statistics.

·  Assists with the direction of student worker, as required.

E.  Qualifications Required:

Education & Experience

·  Completion of a Library Technician Diploma and 2-4 years of relevant library experience, including experience in media cataloguing and library media services.

·  An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

·  Current experience in using an automated library system.

·  Experience in the media industry and event planning an asset.

·  Current knowledge of a diverse range of library resources functions and operations, especially media resources and microcomputer applications, indexing, and media copyright.

·  Intermediate knowledge of media cataloguing (MARC).

·  Knowledge of current software, such as Microsoft Excel, Word, FileMaker Pro, DBTextWorks, BookWhere, WorldCat, Validator, and/or other cataloguing software, DataMagician, Dynix, Banner Financial System, DreamWeaver, Mozilla, Adobe Acrobat, Web searching tools and MySQL an asset.

·  Knowledge of documentary filmmaking industry or educational media distribution an asset.

Skills & Abilities

·  Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, including spelling and grammar.

·  Ability to perform arithmetic and basic accounting procedures.

·  Ability to create and maintain a database, create and generate reports, using microcomputer software.

·  Superior organizational and clerical skill, including keyboarding skills of 55 corrected wpm.

·  Ability to operate media, office and microcomputer equipment.

·  Ability to perform manual and online bibliographic searches.

·  Ability to communicate effectively with the public, staff and supervisors, and establish and maintain good working relationships.

·  Ability to set priorities and be flexible to ongoing change.

·  Commitment to public service essential.

·  Demonstrated resourcefulness, initiative, and the ability to make timely and thoughtful decisions.

·  Strong problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills.

·  Strong aptitude for applying computer programs.

·  Physical ability to move heavy boxes and shelve materials.
