Position Overview
Responsible for delivery of approved training programs in Indigenous primary health care and community services:
- Teaching, management and facilitation of culturally appropriate teaching and learning activities;
- Student assessments, maintenance of student records, supervision of students, and monitoring student progression;
- Liaison with remote Aboriginal communities and health industry partners; and
- Participate in research activities and all requirements of the course and Directorate of Humanities, Division of Further Education.
- Development of teaching resources and assessment material.
Detailed Statement of Duties
- Delivery of ATSI Primary Health Care training courses at both remote Indigenous Australian communities and campus based as required. Including lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, work experience and student field excursions, in styles appropriate to the client group.
- Prepare training schedules and plans, application and enrolment forms and associated resources required for the effective and efficient delivery of the ATSI Primary Health Care course.
- Develop appropriate teaching materials which respond to clients learning needs. In particular, provide specialist technical knowledge and input into the development of a workplace English language, literacy and numeracy course.
- Participate in flexible course delivery strategies.
- Conduct and/or organise workplace assessment as required.
- Maintain all student records as required; report progression of students to the Directorate and relevant Institute areas.
- Undertake the basic administrative tasks required of all Batchelor Institute staff in relation to course delivery.
- Advise students on and document assessments of student competency according to the Institute’s Academic Rules and the national quality standards (ASQA). Consult with and counsel students on their academic progress and recommend appropriate action.
- Participate in research and/or fee-based activities.
- Maintain personal professional development.
- Attend Further Education Division and Institute meetings as required, and participate in quality assurance activities and programs.

Essential selection criteria
1. 3 years experience as a Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner or Registered Nurse with current registration with AHPRA
2. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) for delivery in the VET sector.
3. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively within the social, political and cultural environments of indigenous Australian communities and organisations and communicate sensitively and effectively with indigenous Australians, including adult students and community members.
4. Proven capacity to work effectively with others in a culturally diverse team, as well as being able to operate independently of direct supervision, undertake research and other professional development activities with good organisational and time management skills to undertake a range of administrative, supervisory and liaison tasks including computer technology and electronic communications.
5. Demonstrated capacity to undertake course/unit coordination and teaching with limited resources at a community level and to initiate and develop culturally appropriate curriculum teaching resources in ATSI Primary Health Care, and evaluate their effectiveness responding effectively to the learning needs of adult Indigenous Australian students.
6. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory in a light aircraft, must possess a Northern Territory ‘C’ class drivers licence with experience of driving on unformed roads, and must be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to the Batchelor Institute staff, including camping out.
7. Demonstrated understanding of equal opportunities, affirmative action and quality assurance (ASQA) principles and practices.
