Position purposeThe Assistant Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to develop and maintain scholarly research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

Key result areas and responsibility Level A education-focused academics are expected to make a solid contribution to teaching and learning within their school or faculty and to inspire and motivate students to learn through effective communication. Level A education-focused academics should have a sound grasp of their subject matter and the development of assessment tasks and activities that foster intellectual independence.

As a Level A academic staff member (Teaching and Research), specific duties are assigned in line with the University’s categories of employment for academic staff.

Education-Focused Level A academic staff duties will have an emphasis on:

• reviewing teaching activities and identifying and implementing strategies designed to improve outcomes for students; • developing, applying and reviewing strategies through consideration of disciplinary and or learning and teaching research, and through effective collaboration with other staff at school level; • working to disseminate disciplinary or educational innovations in documented, peer-reviewed activities and potentially participating in applications for competitive funding; • undertaking a range of activities that contribute to maintaining currency with disciplinary and learning and teaching innovation; • demonstrating efficient performance in allocated roles; • taking on some responsibilities and contributing outcomes within school committees; and • onset in developing external contributions to the community or to the discipline/profession.

A Level A academic shall work with support, guidance and/or direction from staff classified at Level B and above and with an increasing degree of autonomy as the education-focused academic gains in skill and experience.

Key selection criteria Essential

1.  A position at this level will normally have completed four years of tertiary study in the relevant discipline or have equivalent qualifications or research or teaching experience. In many cases a position at this level will require an honours degree or higher qualification.

2.  Possess a high-level of interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team across both the education and service sectors;

3.  Ability to work positively and cooperatively with students, internal and external teams and agencies;

4.  Demonstrated ability to stimulate, actively engage and educate a given audience; and

5.  Proven ability, commitment and passion for engaging in research activities.

Desirable

1.  Current practical experience within an industry related to discipline;

2.  Previous teaching experience in a tertiary environment; and

3.  A research doctorate in [insert discipline] or another relevant discipline.
