Position Title: Child AssessmentField Data Collector

Needed: Individuals to work with a team of data collectors to conduct assessments with children in preschool classrooms, elementary schools, and/or community settings in several areas in MA (Boston, Lowell/Lawrence, and Springfield/Holyoke) fromSeptember through October 2017. Mandatory training will take place in August (dates below). Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates preferred. The goal of this research is to look at the implementation and effects of a state effort to expand access to and participation in preschool. Abt Associates, a research firm in Cambridge, MA, will be overseeing this work.

Position Description

  • Data collectors will conduct a language screener and direct assessments with children in preschool classrooms across multiple programs or kindergarteners in elementary schools or community settings. They will usestandardizedassessment instruments that measureearly reading skills, receptive and expressive vocabulary skills, math skills, and executive functioning skills.

  • Child assessmentsin preschool and elementary schools will likely be conducted during school hours. Assessments conducted in community settings will be scheduled with parents/guardians on an individual basis.
  • This position may include helping to locate families in communities and arranging times to assess children in community settings such as public libraries or cafés.
  • This position will include regular data entry on tablets provided by the study team.
  • Must be available 3-5 days per week,September 2017through October 2017, during the school day.Training will likely be 5-7 full-days (8:30am-5:00pm) in August. See below for specific training dates.
  • This is a part-time temporary position.

Education (preferred):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, or related field preferred

Job Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail are required
  • Experience working with children inearly childhood and elementary education settings strongly preferred
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Training/education in child development preferred
  • Previous research experience preferred
  • Comfort with accurately entering data and using a tablet required

Job Location:

  • Child assessments will take place in preschools, elementary schools, and community settings located in several areas in MA (Boston, Lowell/Lawrence, and Springfield/Holyoke). You will be assigned to a primary location.
  • Data collectors must be able to transport themselves to the sites.

Job Training:

  • Candidates must be able to attend training sessions [Training is tentatively planned for August 16-18 and August 21-22 in Cambridge, MA, with additional field trainingin early September. Bilingual staff only will have additional trainingon August 23-24thin Cambridge.]
  • All training time is paid.

Other:

  • Candidates will be required to have CORI/SORI checks, which can be arranged upon conditional hiring.
  • Weekly timecards will be completed online, so candidates must have access to computer and internet as well as some facility in using both.

Salary:

  • $18-22 per hour, based on experience. No benefits provided. We will pay for approved travel expenses according to study regulations.
