Common core standards: RI 2:Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. RI 6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose. RI 8: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning. W 2: Write informative/ explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. W 5: Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience. SL 1: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions. L 3:Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions indifferent contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening. L 4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases.

EL Standards:

Part I: Interacting in meaningful ways:

1. Students will contribute to class, group, and partner discussions by asking and answering relevant questions and providing well-articulated comments. 6. Students will explain and synthesize ideas based on close reading of various texts and online resources. 10. Students will write arguments collaboratively and independently using the Jane Shaffer graphic organizers.

Part II: Learning About How English Works:

1. Students will analyze the organizational structure of different texts by establishing clear relationships among claims, counterclaims, reasons, and evidence. 2/6/7: Four qualities of a well-written paragraph: Unity, coherence, completeness, order.

Part III: Using foundational Literacy Skills:

Students will continue to develop their vocabulary by using looking at the similarities between their native language and English (Spanish cognates).
