Position Openings: Up to three (3) Youth Environmental Interns

Overview

The Baltimore Community Foundation seeks to hire two to three (2-3)Youth Environmental Interns. These positions will report to the Youth Sustainability Coordinator and will workclosely with the Baltimore Office of Sustainability, Baltimore City Public Schools, and other partners. Current Baltimore City Public Schools high school students are eligible to apply (minimum 9th grade).

The Youth Sustainability Coordinator works with city public schools to help “Green Teams” of students implement grant-funded environmental projects. The role of the Youth Environmental Interns will be to help the Green Teams make a bigger impact on their schools’ and the city’s environment. We are especially interested in hiring students who have been members of Green Teams in the past.

Duties

While the interns will work together, we anticipate splitting the work into three categories, with one intern working on each:

  • Administration – Review grant applications, gather and enter information, contact applicants and be a point of contact for schools during project implementation.
  • Policy – Connect to legislators and non-profits, and create informational briefings and serve as the point person for any policy ideas that emerge from student work in schools .
  • Organizing – Schedule meetings between student leaders and support action projects such as volunteer days and bike rides and work with student leaders on developing an action campaign around key issues emerging from student work in schools and communities.

Additional duties for all interns may include:

  • Meet with theYouth Sustainability Coordinator weekly.
  • Develop and work on environmental issue campaigns.
  • Write posts about internship activities on a shared blog.
  • Attend leadership trainings and conferences.
  • Basic administrative tasks.
  • Participate in outdoor experiences (i.e. canoeing/kayaking, tree plantings, hiking).
  • Additional tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a current Baltimore City Public Schoolshigh school student (min. 9th grade).
  • Musthave own phone.
  • Must be comfortable with basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, Google Drive, etc.).
  • Ability to work some flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Interest and comfort in working with teachers, peers, and volunteers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A high level of organization, motivation, and enthusiasm.
  • Prior involvement or interest in issues related to the environment, policy, and/or community organizing is strongly preferred. Examples include:
  • Membership on a Green Team
  • Participating in trash clean ups or tree plantings
  • Participating in Student Government Associations
  • Volunteering or working with issuecampaigns or election campaigns

Compensation: $10/hour. No benefits are provided.

Commitment: Interns will be expected to work between 5 and 10 hours per week from October2016 to June 2017

Location: The location of the position is flexible. Many meetings will be downtown at 417 E. Fayette Street, and others will be off site and at school locations.
