POSITION:INLAND FIELD TECHNICIAN

WAGE:$10.50/hr

TERM:40 hours/week; 16 weeks duration

May – August 2018; starting and end dates can be flexible

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Inland Biology program completes work activities designed to monitor, protect, and restore inland fish and wildlife resources within the 1836 Ceded Territory. The Inland Field Technician will assist inland program staff with field data collection, some data analysis, biological sample identification, data entry, educational programs, and maintenance or repair of equipment for a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative project focused on wildlife and vegetation inventories and Sugar Maple stand assessments on the Bay Mills Indian Community’s Sugar Island reservation. Position responsibilities will include completing vegetation inventories (trees, shrubs, and understory vegetation) and sugar/red maple stand assessments. In addition, the Technician will construct and maintain deer exclosures, and conduct small mammal trapping/assessments, trail camera, woodcock singing, and ruffed grouse drumming surveys.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist with assessments and field data collection of understory vegetation, trees, shrubs, and wildlife
  2. Sample processing and identification of biological samples in the field and lab
  3. Collection of chemical, physical, and biological water quality samples from wetlands or streams
  4. Data entry, analysis, and management
  5. Assist witheducation and outreach programs
  6. Attend mandatory meetings and trainings
  7. Preparing and loading equipment and gear necessary for fieldwork
  8. Assist with equipment and gear inventories and maintenance or repair of equipment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position will require working during adverse weather conditions. Fieldwork and/or office duties may require the employee to begin early in the morning, work late into the evenings, and travel long distances. Heavy lifting (>50 pounds) may be required, and the employee should be in good physical condition.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Successful completion of some college courses in a biology related field
  2. Educational background including mammalogy, ornithology, botany (or other plant identification classes) preferred
  3. Knowledge of field identification of wildlife and plants
  4. Experience sampling for and measurement of habitat parameters
  5. Knowledge of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem processes
  6. Good technical writing and oral communication skills
  7. Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  8. Must have an excellent past work record as demonstrated from reports from past employment references
  9. Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record
