Organization:The Ruth Mott Foundation based in Flint, Michigan, is a family foundation offering grants and programs that serve the Greater Flint community. The Foundation operates Applewood, the historic home of the Charles Stewart Mott families, to demonstrate and support its mission.

Position:Applewood Horticulture Seasonal Assistant

Job Purpose: Will work under the direct supervision of the professional horticulture staff with

opportunities to experience various aspects of horticulture. Opportunity for

significant professional growth in diverse areas of horticultural practice including: culture

and maintenance of annuals and perennials, turf management, maintenance of woody

plants, integrated pest management, orchard management, plant propagation,

greenhouse production and floral display and design. Individuals will be placed in areas

that will enhance their professional goals and will also assist with public events.

Primary Duties:

  • Assists with soil preparation, planting, mulching, weeding, staking and deadheading of perennials, annualsand bulbs.
  • Properly maintains mixed shrub borders and groundcover.
  • Waters, fertilizes and grooms planters and baskets as needed.
  • Learns to monitor, identify and controlinsects, diseases and weeds using integrated pest management practices.
  • Keeps walks, stairs and lawns free of debris.
  • Assists with public events including set-up, tear-down, and interaction with guests.

Qualifications:

  • Have 1 season of gardening experience OR successfully completed Garden Starters training OR successfully completed Master Gardener training OR Currently be enrolled in a study program leading to a B.S. or Associates degree in Horticulture, Floriculture, Botany, Landscape Design, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Must be able to obtain Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator's license with Ornamentals certification within 30 days after hiring.
  • Desire to work outdoors.
  • Ability to use grounds hand tools and power equipment including push mower, lawn tractor and backpack blower.
  • Punctual, responsible,self-motivated individualable to work within small teams.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent time management skills.

As a seasonal position this person will work up to 40 hours/week from spring through fall. Occasional evening/weekend hours required.Will need to travel up and down stairs; bend, stoop, kneel and stand for long periods; to pull/push, lift and carry up to 50lbs; and to reach both above and below shoulder height.
