Portree Medical Centre treats all patients with courtesy, respect, confidentiality and in a dignified manner and that their rights are honoured in full.

Geography

We are an eight-partner general medical services practice, based in Portree, the main town on the Isle of Skye. There are just over 5300 people registered with the Practice, of which about half live in or near Portree. The remainder is distributed over a large surrounding area of scattered crofting townships.

The Practice area extends 12 miles to the west of Portree with the Trotternish peninsula to the north (25mls), Sconser to the south (9mls) and the Island of Raasay to the east.

______

Surgeries/workload

The main surgery premises are situated at the Portree Medical Centre, which is adjacent to PortreeHospital. The Medical Centre was purpose-built in 1989. There are ten separate consulting rooms. Regular peripheral surgeries are also held at Staffin and on the Island of Raasay.

In addition to providing pre-bookable consultations appointments and home visits when requested, we provide minor surgery and liquid nitrogen clinics monthly and offer a range of employment medical services e.g. HGV.

PortreeHospital is cared for by the Partners between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Within the Practice area are two residential homes and a Nursing Home which the doctors visit on a regular basis.

As a training practice, we have a GP Registrar and regularly have medical students from DundeeUniversity and Imperial College London. We are also host practice for a Rural Fellow, which is a one-year NES/Health Board funded GP post.

There are regular Postgraduate Education meetings held in the surgery which are well supported by Raigmore consultants ______

The Team

Working in a busy general medical services practice puts everyone who works here in a special position of trust and responsibility. We work in an environment of mutual respect and trust, in which the contribution of every individual is appreciated, respected and supported. Individual team members are encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills and we rely on everyone to undertake their role and responsibilities in a professional courteous manner and to support their colleagues to do the same.

The attitude to patients and the impression made are of prime importance to the tone of the practice as a whole. We wish to provide a courteous, caring and efficient service to patients and visitors at all times.

The eight Partners work between five and eight sessions each week and are available to provide advice and support. They are supported by a full-time Practice Manager, who has responsibility for business and service management on their behalf. The administration team consists of a Reception Manager, 3 full time and 2 part time administrators and a part time medical secretary. Their contribution is central to the smooth and efficient running of the practice.

We have 4 Practice Nurses, who are all qualified in management of long term conditions; women and child health and health well-being. We also have a Healthcare Auxiliary.

We work closely with our community colleagues, (health visitors, district nurses, midwives) and with the wider NHS community to provide a patient centered quality service.
