Program Completion Requirements

•Admission to the Graduate Certificate Program. This requires, at minimum:

-A baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited institution with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 for Regular admission. An applicant with a regionally-accredited baccalaureate degree with a cumulative undergraduate GPA lower than 2.75 but at least 2.50 is eligible for Conditional admission at the discretion of the Graduate Certificate program. An applicant with 9 or more graduate credits must have a cumulative graduate GPA of at least 3.0, and this GPA supersedes the undergraduate GPA.

•For continuation in the program, students are required to be in good academic standing, requiring a 3.00 GPA for all graduate coursework taken at PSU and a term GPA of at least 2.67 each term.

•Successful completion of the 22 specified graduate credits with a grade of B- or higher for each course used for the graduate certificate plus a cumulative PSU graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (computed on all graduate credit taken at PSU) and a cumulative program GPA of 3.0 or higher (computed on all courses used for the Graduate Certificate).

•All courses applied to the Graduate Certificate must be no more than 7 years old at the time of the awarding of the Graduate Certificate (e.g., a course taken in the Fall term of 2002 will be beyond the seven-year limitation at the close of Fall term 2009).

• For Graduate Certificate programs only, transfer credit is defined as eligible graduate credit taken at other regionally-accredited institutions. Two-thirds of the Graduate Certificate program requirements or 15 credits minimum, whichever is larger, is required to be taken at Portland State University. (Individual programs may set more restrictive limits.) Transfer credit must be letter-graded with a B- or higher and eligible for use in master’s degree programs at PSU. The Proposed Transfer Credit Form for Graduate Certificate Programs (GO-11GC) must be used for approval of transfer credit. A maximum of 7 transfer credits can be applied to this program.

•Application for Awarding of the Graduate Certificate must be filed by the student in the Office of Graduate Studies no later than the first week of the anticipated term of graduation (deadlines for each term are available at OGS, 6th Floor, Unitus Building, SW 4th & Lincoln, or online at A $20 fee will be applied to the student’s account after this application is entered into the Student Information System.
