PORT OF DETROIT continues to increase cargo movement

Maritime industry plays a key role in Michigan’s resurgence

Detroit, July 18, 2017 - The Port of Detroit has experienced a robust first half of 2017, as the movement of general cargo increased from last year. Specifically, from January 1 through June 30, the Nicholson Marine Terminals in Detroit and Ecorse, have handled 36 ocean-going ships, delivering more than 188,000 tons of steel, aluminum and industrial equipment. Cargo throughput is up nearly 23 percent since the same time last year when the Nicholson Marine Terminals handled 153,000 tons of cargo.

As Michigan manufacturers continue to invest in their plants and infrastructure, the demand for industrial machinery increases. The Port of Detroit plays a vital role in the delivery of this equipment, and the terminals’ close proximity to many metro Detroit-based manufacturing facilities saves companiestime and money, while reducing wear and tear on Michigan’s roads.

“We are proud of the work the Nicholson Marine Terminal, and all 25 terminals throughout thePort of Detroit have accomplished,” said John Loftus, executive director at the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. “We look forward to continuing our relationships with these terminals and remaining a key part of the region’s economy.”

Overall, the Port of Detroit, comprised of 25 public and private terminals, handles 15 – 20 million tons of cargo every year. In addition to moving steel, aluminum and machinery, the Port of Detroit moves iron ore, coal, stone, cement and liquid bulk, such as asphalt and fuel. The Port of Detroit supports more than 15,000 jobs in Detroit and Southeastern Michigan and generates more than $100 million in state and local taxes.
