MR. Rivera PE 9-10 Swimming Class.

POOL RULES – Central Islip HS

1. All students are required to change into swim clothes and actively participate in every class: bathing suit or shorts (no cut off jeans, no cotton t-shirt wear), towel.

2. If not participating in class, you still must sit on the shallow side of the bleachers and you will receive a double zero that cannot be made up unless the student has a valid doctor’s note or a note from a teacher or administrator.

Students who have valid doctor’s notes will be given a written assignment that must be handed in before the end of the term.

3. When dressed for class, walk out of the pool locker room and sit on the bench at the shallow end of the pool. Do not enter the water until given permission.

4. If excused for the day, you will sit on the bench at the shallow end of the pool or you may be given a library assignment.

5. No shoes are allowed on the pool deck. No food, drink, gum chewing, CD players, or electronic devices are allowed in the pool area or locker rooms.

6. No one is allowed out of the pool area once he/she has entered. Take care of your needs before you enter the class.

7. All valuables are your responsibility. The school is not responsible for stolen property.

8. When in the water, go to the side of the pool immediately if you feel weak or tired.

9. Be aware of the pool slope and the line that separates the deep end from the shallow end.

10. Do not dive into the water from the shallow half of the pool.

11. Non-swimmers/beginners always stay in shallow water with Mr. Rivera.

12. Diving boards will not be in use during Mr. Rivera’s 9-10 swim class. The only exception is if there are more than 80 percent of participants can swim proficiently in the class and there is only less than 3 swim meetings left for the term. There are no free swim days!

13. No fooling around! We do not want to create a dangerous situation: no throwing objects into the pool, no pushing anyone into the pool, no running or rough play on the deck.

14. One long whistle means stop activity and pay attention to the instructor.

15. Do not move/use the rescue equipment. Do not enter the pool offices (only in a emergency a student may enter).

16. The teacher will signal when it is time to go into the locker room at the end of the class. Students not dressed/participating will also remain seated until dismissed by the teacher. At the end of class, do not wait in the outside hallway without teacher supervision.

17. Put away all equipment you may have used. Do not leave equipment in the water or on the deck.

18. Reminder – Classes must be made up within one week. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero for that class. Girls who received a “P” also know as “P-day” in the grade book have until the end of the term to make up the swim class. Pool make-ups can only be made up in the pool (not the fitness center or 21st century program) during your lunch or study hall. See Mr. Rivera for Pool schedule. If your lunch or study hall does not fit into this time frame special arrangements may be made for make-ups but Mr. Rivera is NOT obligated to do so!

19. Your grade is made up of daily participation and one written exam. If you do not change into pool clothes, you lose a point in participation and lose a point in preparedness (DOUBLE ZERO). Deductions are as follows:

1-point loss – incomplete warm up

1-point loss – not wearing appropriate pool attire

2 point loss – irresponsible personal behavior/poor sportsmanship

2 point loss – poor or no safety awareness

1-point loss – poor or no activity involvement/skill *Any points deducted for improper actions during a class cannot be made up.

20. Students will have 12 min before the end class bell to change. There will be no late passes given by Mr. Rivera!

Pool locker room safety:

a. The floors are slippery. Never run or walk fast on them.

b. Do not operate any electrical appliance while wet.

c. No glass containers allowed.

d. Report any injuries immediately to the teacher.

e. Students participating are highly encouraged to bring their own locks to lock their belongings during swim class. Locks cannot be left overnight! Students must remove lock and take home wet clothing daily! Locks that are found on the lockers during the evening swim program may be cut off the locker!

Emergency Action Plan: Shout for help, all out of the pool, get medical help (dial 911, follow instruction on the wall, assist the teacher.) Students may be asked to get the “AED” (located by the music suite) and another PE teacher from the PE office.

Recommendations:

Students should get a good pair of swim goggles for class. The local wall-mart or sporting goods store should have them.
