Introduction

Political parties and interest groups are enduring parts of American political life. We depend upon such organizations to represent us before government and to ensure that policy-makers understand our preferences and desires. This course is split (roughly) in half. The first half focuses upon interest groups. The second half focuses upon parties. The theme of the course is as follows: Parties and interest groups are important linkage institutions in America, and to understand American politics we must understand where they come from, what they do, and how they influence public policy.
