Bulleted Talking Points for Tour Guides – During Remodel

INTRO - ATRIUM

  • Original (South) wing built in 1966; newer (North) wing added in 1996.
  • Called "Pollak" Library afterdonors Dr. Paulina Pollak (emeritus professor) and her husband George.
  • The entrance is between the two wings and has rotating exhibit galleries in the lobby.This year’s highlights included the Dune Exhibit highlighting works of Frank Herbert, and the upcoming Philip K. Dick exhibit.
  • Starbucks was added in Fall 2013, under agreement to staff the location with student workers and that a percentage of the proceeds go back to the University. While it’s a fairly small location, it’s the largest grossing Starbucks in Orange County.

LIBRARY NORTH

1st FLOOR

  • INFORMATION & LEARNING COMMONS (ILC): integrated area of computers, partners, & Ref Desk.Over the academic year, will answer over 8K reference questions, 100+ consultations, 500+ library instruction sessions.
  • CIRCULATION DESK: Temporary location for checking in/out & renewing library materials & Reserve items.

Collection exceeds 1 million print titles, and over 200,000 eBooks. eResource adoption increasing every year.

Checked out over 60K books per semester, loaning and borrowing 20-30,000 materials through ILL.

  • TITANCARD: for getting Titancard, adding money to it, replacing lost/stolen cards, etc.
  • WRITING CENTER: substation of the English Department, offers free tutoring assistance on writing papers.

Fall semester, they conducted 5366 tutorials and 1613 summer tutorials.

  • HONOR SCHOLARS CENTER: Office/Student lounge.We showcase senior capstone projects in the library.
  • HIGH-TECH GROUP STUDY ROOMS: with LCD projectors, cameras, smartboards, etc. Laptop and tablet checkout all available from STUDENT GENIUS CORNER located on 1st floor, new wireless printing.

2nd FLOOR

  • UNIVERSITY LEARING CENTER (ULC):provides free one-on-one peer tutoring, drop-in or by appointment. ULC offers academic assistance for over 30 classes, Supplemental Instruction for challenging GE courses, writing workshops for native and non-native English speakers, and study skills building workshops to increase student retention and lower the achievement gap, part of our Strategic Plan.
  • DIGITAL PRINT SERVICES: New full service copy area, includes 3D printing and customer design orders.
  • PERIODICALS: the Library’s collection of print periodicals (magazines, journals, newspapers), as well as many popular books. During remodel, 641,000 books or 77% of our collection has been relocated to the North side.
  • GROUP STUDY ROOMS: first-come-first-serve basis, along the west wall of the floor.
  • FACULTY DEVELOPMENT CENTER: One stop shop for faculty development, including a Faculty Commons. Variety of course topics: Diversity training, Instructional Design, Teaching Apps, HIPs, Grants, Publishing, etc.

3rd FLOOR

  • QUIET STUDY FLOOR. This floor is designated for total quiet study: no talking or phone conversations, recently renovated with new furniture, computers, and book stacks since the remodel.
  • GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS: Most of the collection is located on the 6th floor South, but the Library’s collection of International, U.S., & California/local gov’t. docs and NARA collection are on 3rd floor.
  • GROUP STUDY ROOMS: first-come-first-serve basis, along the west wall of the floor.

4th FLOOR

  • CURRICULUM MATERIALS: children’s books & teaching materials, Donoghue Children’s Lit Center.
  • AUDIOVISUALS: DVD, VHS, laserdisc, vinyl, & cd materials. Listening/viewing rooms with equipment.
  • OPEN GROUP STUDY AREA & GROUP STUDY ROOMS: first-come-first-serve basis, along the west wall.
  • DIGITIZATION PROJECT: More than 3 Terabytes of data from the 1950s-today, including the Elephant races, University catalogs, Student Unrest documents from the 60s-70s, and CA Rancho documents collection. Eventually will be placed into discovery system for University Digital Repository and ULMS efforts.

BASEMENT

  • COMPACT STACKS, PERIODICALS, BOOK SHELVING: movable shelves for storage of library materials.
  • REINFORCED FOR EL NINO: Brought all basement material 1-2 feet above ground in case of flooding.

LIBRARY SOUTH – RENOVATION PLANS

SPACE PLAN GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Floors one, four, five and six of the south side of the library were devastated by the 5.1 magnitude La Habra earthquake that rattled the campus in late March 2014. Launched renovation as part of damage repair plan.
  • Phase 1 completed by end of 2017 at a cost of $18M. Overall, total renovation will cost at least $40M.
  • Increase reader space and collaboration rooms, more student-centered spaces and faculty resources.
  • Vision Statement / Creating a “Library of the Future”: The Pollak library aims to become a model library, nationally recognized for innovative spaces, collections, services, tools and programs that enable the academic success of our students; promote information literacy skills; fulfill the needs of our academic programs and scholarly activities; facilitate and encourage the systematic and serendipitous acquisition of knowledge; invite collaboration; and help interconnect its vibrant and diverse community of learners and scholar.

1st FLOOR

  • VARIOUS RESOURCE CENTERS: All 5 student cultural/resource centers together in the library (African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Chicana & Chicano, Titan Dreamers, and LGBTQ)
  • PATRONS & EMERITI LIBRARY BOOK SALE CENTER: All proceeds from sales are used to finance book purchases for the Pollak Library’s collections and special gifts.

2nd FLOOR

  • LIBRARY & IT ADMINISTRATION: offices
  • NEW FACULTY COMMONS – a one-stop shop for faculty technology needs, faculty development, help with online courses, space for part-time faculty offices, and space that faculty can reserve to meet with students for groups that are bigger than their offices can handle.
  • NEWADVANCED TECHNOLOGY COMMONS: IT support for faculty computer/laptop/iPad questions

3rd FLOOR

  • LIBRARY STAFF AREAS
  • GRADUATION STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER: Open during interim renovation, will move to 1st floor

4th-6th FLOORS

  • Space Plan is devoting an entire floor to archives, combining the library’s University Archives & Special Collections with the College of Humanities and Social Science’s Center for Oral & Public History and the Orange County Archives (Orange County wants to do this, but no deal is in place yet).
