A. Course Objectives

The course objective is to initiate the student in the main topics and problems related to the profession of architect. A good understanding of these problems is of crucial importance for work efficiency in the frame of construction design teams, reuniting both architects and structural engineers in the future career of the student. At the end of the course, the student should be able to understand the main topics connected to architectural composition and architectural design. Nevertheless, concise elementary knowledge concerning the history of architecture, describing main currents, remarkable buildings and constructions, also contributes to a complete professional personality of the future structural engineer and to a proper culture for a specialist acting in construction field.

B. COURSE TOPICS

Introduction (4 hours): Architecture and constructions. General. Elements which influence the architectural concept. Technical conditions for construction. Classification of constructions. Basic elements concerning buildings and their partition.

Basic principles of architectural composition (6 hours): Architectural space – basic rules. Components of the architectural space. Elements which influence architectural space. Architectural composition –laws and basic rules. Laws of architectural composition. Basic rules of architectural composition. Expression means in architectural composition. Character of architectural composition. Scale.

Elements of architectural design (4 hours) Construction design –general. Graphic methods in architectural design. Projection in architectural drawing. Shadow in architectural drawing. Perspective in architectural drawing.

Elements from the history of architecture:

General characteristics of architectural currents. Architecture of Babylon and Persia (2 hours)

Architecture of ancient Egypt Architecture of ancient Greece, including pre-hellenic period (2 hours)

Architecture of Etruria and ancient Rome. Architecture of Byzantium (2 hours)

Romanic architecture. Gothic architecture (2 hours)

Renaissance and Baroque (2 hours)

Classicism, Romantism and Eclectism in architecture (2 hours)

Modern architecture (2 hours)

E. Evaluation procedure

Final test, composed of two short theoretical subjects answered in written (2 hours): 60% of the final grade

Essay on specialty subjects (to stimulate student individual study and research) for evaluation during the term: 40% of the final grade
