SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN

Policy statement: Safeguarding children

• Our first responsibility and priority is towards the children in our care. If we have any cause for concern we will report it, following the Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures. The relevant local procedures that are held by us are available on request. We understand that child abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional and neglectful, or a mixture of these.

We are also aware of and have undertaken Prevent Training .Prevent is a strategy to recognize and prevent Radicalisation and Extremism. Training regarding FGM and Honor based violence plus Forced Mariage has also been undertaken and will be updated as necessary.

We understand the importance of recognizing possible Bruising,Scalds,Burns to Non Mobile Babies and necessary procedures to follow.

Any Burn/Scald or Bruising must be reported to The Multi Agency Screening Team

Early Intervention training has also been accessed to enable us to recognise if a child is not achieving EYFSlevels and the possible reasons for the failure. This could lead to the Child/Parent being assessed for Early Intervention. Early Intervention is a means of recognizing if a Child/Parent requires assistance due to i.e a Parents lack of Parenting Skills or a Child who has some form of learning difficulty or a child suffering from a form of abuse that could lead to a child not developing age appropriately.

• Procedure (how we put the statement into practice)

• We have copies of, and are familiar with, the Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures (see page 3). Every six months we -check that we have the latest version of the relevant procedures (or any documents that may replace them in the future).

• We keep up to date with child protection issues and relevant legislation by taking regular training courses and by reading relevant publications which we download from Morton Michel. This helps us be aware of the signs of abuse or neglect and what to do if we have a concern.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead ( person ) is William Cooper, or Deputy - Janet Cooper

•If we are concerned about a child's welfare we will contact Quality Support Team, the NSPCC,or other relevant support services for advice, confidentially will be assured .

• Parents must notify us of any concerns they have about their child and any accidents, incidents or injuries affecting the child, which will be recorded with Date, time, nature of accident/injury/incident and action taken.

• We work together with parents to make sure the care of their child is consistent — please refer to our Working with Parents policy.

• If we notice:

• significant changes in children's behaviour

• unexpected bruising or marks or signs of possible abuse • any comments made which give us cause for concern • deterioration in general wellbeing which causes concern • signs of neglect

We will implement the Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures without delay to minimise any risk to the child.

We will call the local social services' duty desk immediately, if it is known that a child is at risk of harm. We will follow it up with a letter within 48 hours. We will keep a factual record of the concern and will ask the parents for an explanation, providing it would not put the child at risk.

•Where necessary we will follow up concerns, if possible, to ensure that they have been actioned by the relevant body.

• If a child tells us that they or another child is being abused, we will:

• show that we have heard what they are saying, and that we take their allegations seriously

• encourage the child to talk, but we will not prompt them or ask them leading questions, we will not interrupt when a child is recalling significant events and will not make a child repeat their account

• explain what actions we must take, in a way that is appropriate to the age and understanding of the child

• write down what we have been told using exact words where possible • make a note of the date, time, place and people who were present at the discussion

• then report our concerns immediately to the duty social worker who has the experience and responsibility to make an assessment of the situation.

• the child's full name and address

• the date and time of the record

• factual details of the concern, for example bruising, what the child said, who was present

• The welfare requirements within the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage require providers to take the necessary steps to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in their care. In particular they are required to implement an effective safeguarding children policy.

• The provider must ensure that anyone working with them understands the safeguarding policy and procedure.

• Providers should follow the guidelines set out by “Working Together to Safeguard Children 2013.
