1.Purpose

A Language Other Than English (L.O.T.E)

1.1  Enhances the development of communication skills through the use of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

1.2  Promotes in students an understanding of their world and of their wider society. Students can develop an awareness of languages and an appreciation of different cultures.

1.3  Is learned through meaningful and challenging activities. Students should be actively involved in the exploration and development of communicative needs.

1.4  To learn to communicate for many purposes and contexts and complement the integrated unit topic.

2.Outcomes

2.1 L.O.T.E is aimed at supporting classroom activities.

2.2 To introduce the L.O.T.E program as an enjoyable language learning experience with a positive approach.

2.3 To equip children with the capability of using grammatical structures, phrases and vocabulary.

2.4 To develop an understanding that learning a language gives individuals insight into the culture and at the same time leads them to an appreciation of their own culture.

2.5 Learning a language develops an awareness of the arts through self-expression, learning and enjoyment.

3.Implementation

3.1 The L.O.T.E program will be conducted in Mandarin, Greek and Indonesian in the beginning and advanced level.

3.2 The L.O.T.E teachers will be an integral Key Learning Area in the school.

3.3 The L.O.T.E teachers will take responsibility for the development of resources.

3.4 Valuable resources will be sought from the wider community such as:local schools, libraries and outside experts.

3.5 Program development and implementation will be based on the Curriculum Standards Framework II:L.O.T.E

3.6 L.O.T.E teachers will be encouraged to seek support through networks and other language teachers.

3.7 Liaison with classroom teachers to promote activities, where possible, that compliment the current classroom program.

3.8 All students will be assessed against appropriate outcomes in the CSF II.

Review

The School Council and L.O.T.E teachers will review the policy every three years to ensure it is providing the desired outcomes in curriculum development as set out in the Curriculum Standards Frameworks II.
