UNIFORM POLICY

INTRODUCTION

Bass Valley Primary School Council is committed to the wearing of school uniform or school colours by all its students. We believe that a uniform dress code encourages students to take pride in their own appearance, instils a recognition of themselves as an integral part of the school community and assists in developing pride in representing BassValleyPrimary School.

PURPOSE

This policy is based on the belief that uniform school colours:

  • Develop a sense of unity among students.
  • Foster a sense of belonging to the school.
  • Enhance school identity, tone, morale and general appearance.
  • Ensures students are easily recognised which fosters individual safety and group security.
  • Provides economical, long wearing and practical clothing for school activities.
  • Allow active and safe participation in school activities.

GUIDELINES

Implementation:

  • The wearing of school uniform or school colours is compulsory
  • After consultation with the school community, School Council has developed a Dress Code that we believe provides choice for the students, allows for students to safely engage in the many varied school activities, and caters for the financial constraints of families.
  • The Dress Code applies during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when students are on school excursions and interschool sports.
  • Comfortable clothing which permits safe and unrestricted movement in all physical activity should be worn to school. Track suit trousers, shorts or sports briefs in school colours should be worn on days of Physical Education classes. Sneakers and runners are also strongly recommended during Physical Education sessions.
  • There is to be no wearing of make-up. Sleepers, studs and watches are the only jewellery to be worn, due to safety issues.
  • Extreme hair colours and/or extreme hairstyles are considered to be inappropriate.
  • The only head wear that is acceptable is Sunsmart hats consistent with our Sunsmart policy. They must be worn outside in terms 1 & 4. Hats are not to be worn inside.
  • The student Dress Code, including details of uniform items and places of purchase, will be published in the newsletter and information book at the start of each year.
  • School Council requires the Principal be responsible for implementation of the Dress Code in a manner consistent with the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Parents seeking exemptions to the Dress Code due to religious beliefs, ethnic or cultural background, student disability, health condition or economic hardship must apply in writing to the principal.
  • It will be compulsory to wear school uniform to all excursions and interschool sports events. Students not in school uniform or colours will not be allowed to attend. Requests for exemption must be in writing to the principal before the particular event.
  • All articles of clothing must be named for ease of identification of lost clothing items.
