Technical Notes

The Policies in Force by Program by State dataset provides the number of insurance policies in force for each program for each state.

The policies in force are the number of life insurance policies in force.

The programs include:

  1. National Service Life Insurance
  2. Service-Disabled Veterans Insurance
  3. United States Government Life Insurance
  4. Veterans’ Mortgage Life Insurance
  5. Veterans’ Reopened Insurance
  6. Veterans’ Special Life Insurance

The total is the total number of life insurance policies in force for all programs combined for each state.

The data is report at the state level, plus insureds in American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Marshall Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Data is current as of August 31, 2011.

National Service Life Insurance / Number of policies in force for the National Service Life Insurance program, which is life insurance for World War II-era Veterans. Closed to new issues.
Service-Disabled Veterans Insurance / Number of policies in force for the Service-Disabled Veterans Insurance program, which is life insurance for Veterans who have been received a rating for a service-connected disability from VA. Open to new issues.
United States Government Life Insurance / Number of policies in force for the United States Government Life Insurance program, which is life insurance for World War I-era Veterans. Closed to new issues.
Veterans’ Mortgage Life Insurance / Number of policies in force for the Veterans’ Mortgage Life Insurance program, which is mortgage life insurance for Veterans who have received a Specially Adapted Housing grant or Special Housing Adaptation grant from VA. Open to new issues.
Veterans’ Reopened Insurance / Number of policies in force for the Veterans’ Reopened Insurance program, which is Life insurance for World War II-era Veterans. Available to those who had been eligible to obtain insurance between October 8, 1940 and January 1, 1957. Closed to new issues.
Veterans’ Special Life Insurance / Number of policies in force for the Veterans’ Special Life Insurance program, which is Life insurance for Korean War-era Veterans. Closed to new issues.
