19 June
Police Force Formed
An evening designed to understand the work of the Police. The girls have the chance to play detectives. A little pre- planning is required.
Activity 1
(No equipment required)
Observation is a key part of police work. How good are the Brownies at observation?
Before the meeting ask someone who is not known to the girls to drop in to the meeting on the pretext of bringing something for you. They need only stay there for a minute or so but arrange for them to come at a time when all the girls will be likely to see them i.e. while you have all the girls in a circle to explain what todays activities are.
After she/he has left ask the girls in their sixes to agree on a description of the caller
What were they wearing?
Did they have glasses?
How old do they think they were?
What colour was their hair?
What did they leave?
How good was their description, do all the descriptions match?
Activity 2
(Equipment – card, inkpads, glass, talcum powder, fine makeup brush)
Finger prints have been used by the police for over 100 years. Explain to the Brownies that everyone’s finger prints are different.
Give each Brownie a card with five square marked on it, one for each finger and the thumb of the right hand.
Using an inkpad each Brownie makes a record of their fingerprints. (Supply wet wipes to remove the ink from their fingers before it dries)
Supply each six with a glass, (polish the outside). One Brownie is chosen to pick up the glass and hold it for a few moments before placing it back on the table. Nobody else must touch it.
Each six then moves on to another six corner. Give them a small amount of talcum powder and a fine makeup brush. Can they find the fingerprints on the glass and can they match them using the fingerprint cards to determine who handled the glass.
Activity 3
(Equipment – Plaster of Paris)
If you have some outside space the Brownies will have fun taking casts of footprints.
Make a footprint in soft ground.
Gently pour in some Plaster of Paris to about one inch thickness. Leave for approximately 15 mins to set. Carefully lift the mould and brush off the dirt. Can you see the pattern of your trainer, is there anything that makes it “Your” print, worn more on one side etc.
Activity 4
(Equipment – Approx 12 small items)
While you are waiting for your footprints to set play Cops & Robbers (A tag game for 2 teams)
Divide the girls into two teams one team are the Cops and the other the Robbers.
At one end of the playing area you will need a selection of items, anything will do, balls or neckers (Enough for one each for the robbers)
The cops and robbers stand at the opposite side of the playing area and on the word “go” the robbers run to steal one of the items. They can only be caught by the cops when they have an item.
How many items can they get back to “home” without being caught.
Play again reversing the teams.
