AUDACITY USE AND EXAMPLES

Before you begin, get a laptop and microphone kit. Please be gentle with the microphones, as the cables and plugs are fragile. Turn on your laptop and log on using your student login and password. Once you have logged on, plug in the microphone.If using a USB mic, plug it in to one of the available USB ports. Wait about ten seconds, and make sure the red light on the microphone becomes lit. If using a standard microphone, plug it in to the port on the front of the computer. Then, open AUDACITY 1.3 (WINDOWS MENU, PROGRAMS).

If using a USB microphone, you must change the settings on Audacity to recognize the microphone. Click on EDIT and PREFERENCES. Make sure the Playback device is the computer speakers, and the Recording is the USB microphone. Make other adjustments as necessary, and then, click OK. You’re now ready to use Audacity.

During your practice time, you are to practice using the microphones, features, and effects that Audacity provides. Once you’ve had some time to play around and get used to its features, you are to complete the four examples provided below. Once you finish each example, follow these instructions for saving it as an .mp3 file:

-Click FILE and then EXPORT/SAVE AS MP3

-Give your file a name. Follow this pattern: First Initial followed by your Last Name and the number of the examples (ex. Jsmith1 would be John Smith’s first example). Then, choose to save it on the computer in your folder, then click SAVE.

-The next box will allow you to give your file more details. Use this information for completing the fields, then click OK:

  • TITLE: Example1 (or whatever number you are completing)
  • ARTIST: First Name and Last Initial
  • ALBUM: Music 8 Audacity Examples

-You DO NOT have to save the project, as you have already created an .mp3 file of your completed project

AUDACITY EXAMPLES TO COMPLETE (Choose One)

  1. Record one voice reading a sentence of 8-10 seconds in length. Using the EFFECT menu, practice raising and lowering the pitch, speed, and tempo of your voice. The final MP3 should be a low-pitched voice.
  2. Say 8-10 words one at a time, leaving about 3 seconds between each word. Then, using the ECHO feature, experiment with adding different types of echoes. The final MP3 should include some type of echo applied.
  3. Prepare a few sentences of text. The first time you record, leave out some of the words. Then, go back and record a second time, filling in the missing words. Save the completed MP3.
  4. Practice saying a sentence backwards. Then, record it while you say it backwards. Use the REVERSE feature to see how close you were to saying it correctly. Practice and re-record as needed to get it as accurate as you can, then save the final MP3.
