Sun Desktop Virtualization - Proof of Concept

Checklist

This survey is intended to help gather enough information about a Proof of Concept in order to accurately assess the required resources, level of effort, timelines and risks associated with the PoC. If a question is not applicable to the proposed PoC, please indicate with N/A.

This survey is designed to offer discussion points to determine if a PoC should even be considered.

Account Information:

Organisation Name / University of Alberta
Project Name / Sunray Desktop Virtualization

Organization Profile and Business Driver:

Describe the motivation to investigate this technology and the business issues this solution will address, eg. PC Refresh, Regulatory Compliance, Secure Remote Access, or other Corporate Mandate

The University of Alberta wishes to look at thin client computing for a number of reasons:
-Financial constraints for desktop refresh
-Support of the IT green initiative on campus
-More secure environment
-More consistent desktop environment on campus
-Learn about different technology options for teaching and learning

Project Timelines & Other Compelling Events:

Please indicate any project timelines, eg. Start date, project duration, purchase, etc. Also please describe any compelling events that would indicate a sense of urgency or immediate action for action

This POC would target 2 groups, phase I would be the technical IT group from University Hall and phase 2 may be some administrators at U Hall.

Customer Success Criteria:

Please describe the agreed upon success criteria (core requirements) that, if met, will convince the customer to make a purchase.

The objective of the POC should provide
-Basic windows environment – mail, calendaring, word processing, power point all through windows terminal services
-Web browser interface
-Investigate how printing works
-Look at session mobility with smart cards
-Determine boot up time of desktop
-Determine what the end user interface looks like
Time permitting
-Look at how Elluminate, Skype would function
-Investigate how videos off the internet perform

* Due to current technology limitations, these requirements cannot be satisfied directly by the use of thin client technology. Some limitations may be overcome by 3rd party devices or designated media stations (ie. Traditional PCs)

** Requirements that may result in a less optimal user experience or that could increase the amount of time and resources to implement. The ability to fulfill audio requirements may be dependent on display protocol in use. RDP protocol does not support upstream audio and experiences a 3s delay in audio playback. ICA protocol overcomes those RDP limitations. However, ICA (Citrix) is only available for Windows 2003 implementations and is not applicable to VDI (WinXP Pro) deployments.
