Letter from our Exchange Student, Hannah Nicholls
Hello Helen,
I just wanted to let you know how I was going since my last report in June, I recently moved to a new family on the 7th of July and now I am two weeks into my two month summer holidays. The last couple of weeks of school went really quickly and as I am improving with my German I am able to get more involved in the classes. In my final week of school we had an activities week and everyday was something different. On Monday and Tuesday we spent four hours in the art room creating self-portrait sculptures and on Wednesday my class cooked breakfast together and I treated them to a slice of Vegemite on toast each which nobody liked. On Thursday we went to a high ropes course for the day which was so fun. It was on the side of a mountain and at the end we did a long flying fox over a water fall.
Since I have moved into my new family at the beginning of summer holidays I have been very busy. They live in the centre of the city Klagenfurt whereas with my other two host families I lived in smaller villages outside of the city. I now have a seven year old host brother and a thirteen year old host sister. Both my host parents are doctors although my host mum is currently not working. Every day at the moment it is around 25 to 30 degrees and luckily my host family also have a house on the lake Worthersee so nearly every day we travel 20 minutes to the house and spend hours swimming, grilling and stand up paddle boarding. Two weeks ago I met with Bjarne and his family who holiday on the lake every year. On Wednesday they took me to Bratislava in Slovakia for one night. While we were there we did a Segway tour around the city, it was so pretty and great to catch up with BJ.
The next weekend on Saturday night we went to Castle Hochosterwitz for a Knight Festival. It was really funny and my host brother really enjoyed it. There were many people dressed in medieval clothes and living as the knights would have lived.
On Sunday night I went with my host sister to a concert. It was a showcase of a 12 year old girl from England who plays piano and violin and she played six of her compositions with a full orchestra.Last week I went with my host family to Schladming for two nights, it is a popular Ski destination in Austria during the winter and a popular place for hiking during the summer. On the first day we did a four hour hike alongside a waterfall that lead up to a small lake thats water is 3 degrees because it runs right from the top of the mountains.
On the second day we had to wake up early so we could catch a gondola up the top of the Dachstein which is a 2,995 m high mountain. At the top we did a sky walk between the mountain and walked over a glacier which was covered in snow. I know right snow in summer. There was also an underground ice palace with heaps of ice sculptures in the hallways.
Next week I am going to Graz for the whole week to stay with my host cousins and they will show me around the city.
I hope to hear from you soon,
Kind regards, Hannah Nicholls
