Orientation

The Plextalk PTN2 Cross is sold with its button cover attached so not all of the buttons will be visible. This orientation assumes the cover has been removed. To remove it, place the unit on a table with the buttons facing upwards and the round ridged grille (speaker) in the top right corner. On both sides, near to the front are clips which hold the cover in place and by pulling these outwards slightly will allow the front of the cover to lift so it can be easily removed.

Top

There are 27 rubber buttons on the top. There is a column of four buttons on the left side, which are from top to bottom as follows: oval shaped Menu button used to access the main menu, a diamond shaped Bookshelf button used to switch between CD, SD and USB memory, another diamond shaped Goto button used for page and heading navigation and the last, triangular button is the Bookmark button used for bookmark navigation, insertion and deletion.

To the right of these buttons and located centrally on the unit is a block of 12 grey buttons generally called the number keypad. It is laid out exactly like a push button telephone keypad with four rows of three buttons. The first row has numbers 1, 2 and 3, the second row has numbers 4, 5 and 6, the third row has numbers 7, 8 and 9 and the fourth row has the Star button, 0 button and the Hash button. The number 5 button has a small raised dot on it to help you locate it. The Hash button, which is located at the bottom right of the number keypad, is used for confirming, so it will be called the Enter button throughout this guide. Similarly, the Star button, which is located at the bottom left of the number keypad, is used to cancel, and will be called the Cancel button.

Some of the buttons have secondary functions and these are listed below:

Number 2 = Arrow Up or Cancel

Number 4 = Arrow Left or Move Back

Number 6 = Arrow Right or Move Forward

Number 8 = Arrow Down or Enter

Number 9 = Backup files or Move files

Star = Undo

Hash = Redo

Above the number keypad is a row of three rocker buttons, which are up and down controls. From left to right they are: Tone up and down button, the centre button is the Volume Up and down button and is larger than the other two and is black in colour. To the right is the Speed Up and Down button.

Underneath the number keypad is a row of three buttons. The black centre button is rectangular in shape and has a distinctive recess for easy location. This is the Play/Stop button. The two buttons either side of the Play/Stop button are semi-circular in shape and on the left is the Rewind button and on the right is the Fast Forward button.

The last group of buttons on the top surface are the five buttons on the right hand side arranged in a reversed c shape. The first button is to the right of the number 6 button and is the oval shaped Information button. This is used to get the information of the DAISY book, audio files and text files. Press and hold this button to hear the current date and time. To the right of this button is the small round Sleep timer button.Below this button is the sunken round Power button - used for power on/off, which also has a tactile indented line in the case to help mark its position. Below this is the square black eject button, which again is slightly recessed from the casing.

Between the eject button and the fast forward button are two triangular shaped rocker buttons, which is the Previous/Forward Title button. Similar to the volume, speed and tone rocker buttons this button is divided into two and the right side is the Next title button and the left is the Previous title button.

The following edges detailed are described with the top of the player facing up and the front edge nearest to you.

Bottom

The battery cover is situated towards the left edge on the bottom of the player and is denoted by three narrow tactile ridges. The cover is fixed with a screw. Your player is supplied with the battery pre-installed so there is no need to open the battery compartment.

Front

Along the front edge of the player, closest to you is the CD drive slot where DAISY and music CD's are inserted. On the corner of the top and front edge, near the centre, is a little indent to mark the centre of the slot. There is also a small ledge below the CD slot to help with locating where to insert the CD. Once half of the CD has been inserted the CD will be taken into the unit automatically when the player is switched on.

Left edge

On the left of the unit are three sockets. From top to bottom, these are the USB slot, the headphone socket and the SD card slot. The SD card slot is for both the SD card and SDHC card. The USB slot can be used for USB flash memory.

Back edge

There is one small round socket located centrally on the rear of the unit. This is positioned in a square shaped housing, and is the mains power socket, which is the socket to insert the mains adaptor.

Getting started

These instructions provide a basic overview of the layout of the player. You can access a built-in help file within the Plextalk PTN2 Cross at any time. The file does not contain the full contents of the User Guide but it does contain the most important chapters that you may wish to refer to while using your player. The file has been created in DAISY 3 text only format and uses the built-in synthetic speech.

There is also a CD supplied with your player which has the instructions in DAISY format which you can listen to using your player. These instructions give more detail and further information of how to adjust the advanced settings. As well as the DAISY version there are also text and HTML versions on the CD.

Accessing the built-in help file
  • Press the Number 0 button once.
  • It will load the help file at the position you were playing the last time you used it.
  • Navigate the file in the same way that you navigate other DAISY text only titles. Further information on navigating DAISY titles will be given further on in these instructions.
  • To exit the built-in help file either press the Number 0 button once or press the Title button to switch to one of the other media.
Charging the Plextalk PTN2 Cross

Place your player face up in its normal operating position. To charge the battery using mains power, plug the supplied mains adaptor into the power socket on the back edge and plug the mains into the wall socket.

The battery will normally take four hours to fully charge. However, when using your player for the first time, or after one month of storage, you should connect to a mains power supply for at least 24 hours.
