TODAY’S PROGRAM

Dave Brandon, the Director of

Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Michigan, talked about his department.

The athletic department consists of 325 employees who work with 31 teams made up of 900 students (with 525 on some type of scholarship). It has a budget of $146 million and is totally self-sufficient. It does not take any money from the school’s general fund or the State. In fact, the first $20 million taken in each year is paid to the school for athletic scholarships.

For the student-athletes, the department provides coaching, educational support, medical coverage, a nutritionist, and fitness instructors. A new issue they are addressing is limiting the impact of social media on these 18 to 23 olds. Some fans can be vicious in “support” of their team.

Mr. Brandon’s goal is to make every athlete’s experience the best it can be.

FLOWER RAFFLE

$910 in the pot with $505 going to the winner. Glenn Housey was unable to find the joker but gallantly presented Theresa Divirgil with the beautiful flower arrangement provided by Charvat the Florist.
