Dear Parents,
I will send out a letter every other Thursday to let you know what is going on in our class. Please review, sign, and return the top portion with the attached documents. We are off to a great start!! Your children have been very enjoyable to teach these couple of weeks and we have all had fun getting to know each other.

Announcements

Our classroom web page is up and running! http://rreswitherspoon.wikispaces.com/

Because no one checked “no” on the media release form, I placed pictures on the web page. However, if you don’t want your child’s picture to be included / removed, please let me know and I will update immediately.

In effort to increase the knowledge of current events and strengthen comprehension, I will order a subscription for your child. Please send cash or check made payable to Scholastic in the amount of $4.00 by August 31.

Academic Update

Math – We have been learning how to efficiently estimate how many hundreds are in a group of objects. Today, we started inventory assessments to see what students remember from previous years. During my pre-assessment, I noticed that many are having difficulties “up-counting” with mental math i.e. If given the number 10, how many more is needed to get to the number 19. I will start incorporating this into our Daily Oral Math.

Reading – We learned to use pre-reading strategies (make predictions and list wonderings) before reading a book. We also learned the literary elements within a story i.e. Title, Genre, Characters, Setting, Problem, and Resolution.
Language - We started learning prepositions on yesterday.

Social Studies - We started a unit on the Thirteen Colonies. The children researched colonies within the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies.

DOL – Rules 1 & 2 (Capitalization and Punctuation)
