Application Requirements
Freshmen Applicants
Applicants are expected to have completed a strong college preparatory program of study from an accredited high school. Admission to the university will be competitive based on a combination of the applicant’s overall high school academic record, standardized test scores, and other factors that will provide a holistic view of the applicant. To apply, all first time freshmen must submit the following to complete an application:
· Online application with $35 application fee oracceptable fee waiver
· Official high school transcript
· SAT or ACT scores
· One 500 word essay
· One teacher or counselor letter of recommendation(fall applicants only)**
Transfer Applicants
Morgan State University welcomes applications from transfer students from community colleges and four-year colleges and universities accredited by Maryland and/or a regional accrediting association. All transfer students must submit the following to complete an application:
· Online application with $35 application fee
· Official transcript from all colleges/universities
· Official high school transcript (if student has less than 24 credits)
· SAT or ACT scores (if student has less than 12 credits)
Students are expected to have a cumulative average of 2.0 from all colleges attended and to be "in good standing" at the last institution attended. (If students have less than 24 credits, they must also meet the respective freshmen requirements.) In all cases, the transfer student must earn the last 30 credit hours toward the desired degree at the University as a full-time or part-time student. Applications from transfer students with A.A. and A.A.S. degrees earned at Maryland community colleges will be evaluated as determined by the Maryland Student Transfer Policy.
*Please note: developmental and/or remedial classes are not transferable. Official high school transcripts are required only for students who are transferring with less than twenty four (24) credits from the community college.
International Applicants
We’re committed to enrolling a diverse student body from around the word. As part of that commitment, we seek to enroll international students who demonstrate strong academic performance with records suggesting potential for success at Morgan.
All international students must submit the following to complete an application:
· Online application with $35 application fee
· Secondary School Certificate (translations required if not in English)
· Official GCE, CXC, CGSE, WAEC, CSC
· Course by course evaluation of all post-secondary school work
· Financial Certificate
· Bank Statements
· Affidavit of Support
· Transfer Eligibility Certification (only if transferring from a U.S. institution)
· SAT or ACT scores (if seeking consideration for the University Honors Program)
· TOEFL or IELTS scores (if English was not the medium of instruction)
Admission Deadlines
Fall Priority Consideration Deadline
Completed applications received by November 15 will receive an admission decision no later than February 15 (if you are mailing documents, these must be postmarked by November 15). Students should apply by this date for best consideration for merit-based scholarships and invitations to special programs. This is not an early decision program; all admitted students have until May 1 to confirm their enrollment.
Fall Regular Application Deadline
Completed applications received by February 15 will receive an admission decision no later than April 15. Complete applications received after this date will be reviewed on a rolling and space-available basis.
International Application Deadlines
Fall
Completed applications received by December 1 will receive an admission decision no later than March 15 (if you are mailing documents, these must be postmarked by December 1).
Fall Confirmation Deadline
May 1 is the deadline for confirming fall enrollment.
Spring Deadline
Completed applications are due by January 10. Decisions will be released on a rolling basis for spring (January) enrollment.
International Application Deadlines
Spring
Completed applications received by August 1 will receive an admission decision on a rolling basis (if you are mailing documents, these must be postmarked by August 1).
Note: SEVIS: Student Exchange Visitor Information System.International Students may only receive an F-1 visa from Morgan State University.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
High School Applicants
Applicants are expected to have completed a strong college preparatory program of study from an accredited high school. Admission to the university will be competitive. In addition, all applicants are expected by graduation to have met the following minimum high school course requirements:
English – 4 years or state-approved equivalent
Science – 3 years or state-approved equivalent: two must be in different areas, with at least one lab experience
History or Social Sciences – 3 years or state-approved equivalent
Mathematics – 3 years or state-approved equivalent: including algebra I or applied math I, formal logic or geometry, and algebra II or applied math II. A fourth year of mathematics is strongly recommended.
Foreign Language or Advanced Technology Education – 2 years or state-approved equivalent
Criteria Considered in the Application
Review Process
We assess each category through a combination of quantitative and qualitative criteria. Criteria are flexibly applied, so the listing below does not reflect order of importance:
· The student's academic performance in high school
· The rigor of the high school’s academic program
· Strength of curriculum
o Honors, AP, and IB courses
· Progression of Performance
· SAT I (combined critical reading and math) and/or ACT scores
· Class rank (if utilized by the high school)
· The student essay
o Quality of content and grammar
· Extracurricular activities
· School counselor and teacher recommendations
· Leadership in school/community activities
· Unique talents and/or abilities may be taken into consideration
· Personal experiences and background may be taken into consideration
· Maryland residency may be taken into consideration
· Alumni affiliation may be taken into consideration
G.E.D. Applicants
1. G.E.D. recipients must earn a score of 410 on each section of the high school equivalency examination and at least a total score of 2250.
Transfer Applicants
Credit will be accepted from institutions accredited by Maryland and/or a regional accrediting association. Students are expected to have an average GPA of 2.0 from all colleges attended and to be "in good standing" at the last institution attended. Listed below are the admission requirements:
·0-11 *transferable college credits with a G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher and meet the regular freshmen requirements.
·12-23 *transferable college credits with a G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher as well as a G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher from high school.
·24 or more *transferable college credits with a G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher.
*Please note: developmental and/or remedial classes are not transferable.
Applicants with an A.A. and/or A.A.S. degrees earned from a Maryland community college will be evaluated as determined by the Maryland Student Transfer Policy.
International Applicants
Applicants educated under the British system must submit official evidence of at least five (5) passes at the 'O' level, General Certificate of Education (GCE) or equivalent regional exams (W.A.E.C., E.S.L.C., E.A.E.C. etc.) These passes must be with grades of A, B, or C.
Applicants from the Caribbean who write the C.X.C. exams must have passing grades of 1, 2, or 3. Please note that only the classical academic subjects (Math, English Language and Literature, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Physics,Spanish, French, etc.) will be accepted.
Applicants from countries where English is not the medium of instruction, must demonstrate their ability to use the English language by submittingresults from one of the following foreign language proficiency examinations: IELTS or TOEFL.
NON-TRADITIONAL APplicants
Early Admission for High School Students
Early admission enables students to be admitted and to matriculate immediately following the completion of their junior year in high school. Students interested in early admission should apply through the normal application process. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the high school counselor and principal. Additionally, a letter of recommendation from the student’s parent(s) should be included. An official high school transcript should be submitted along with the results of the SAT or ACT. The high school must agree in writing to award a diploma to students admitted through this program when they complete a minimum of 24 college credits with a “C” average.
Concurrent Enrollment
Concurrent enrollment may be granted to a high school student who has demonstrated scholarship by earning a 2.0 cumulative GPA and an 850 SAT score (combined critical reading and math) or a 17 ACT composite score. Applicants are eligible to take 100 level courses and specified 200 level courses where the prerequisites have been met. Applicants must also have a recommendation from their school principal or guidance counselor as well as their parent/guardian.
Admission of Home-Schooled Students
If you’ve been home-schooled, you should provide with your completed application a transcript with the following: course descriptions, books used, methods of evaluation and grades received (credit contracts). You should meet the same minimum high school course requirements expected of all applicants; your SAT and/or ACT scores will be strongly considered in the review of your application.
Please also include general information about your home schooling program or agency and a letter of recommendation from an academic professional as well as the home schooling teacher/parent. If you’ve taken college-level courses, you should also include an official college transcript with your application. For Maryland students, the home instruction program must comply with 13A.10.01 of the General Regulations of the State Board of Education.
Mature Students
A mature student is defined as any student out of school continuously for three or more years. A mature student is admitted regardless of the previous college or high school record.
Second Bachelor’s Degree
The Second Bachelor’s Degree Program is designed to meet the needs of college graduates who wish to attain proficiency in a different major field. To be eligible for admission, applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution and must have an average 2.0 GPA from all previously attended institutions.
Non-Degree Seeking Students
Applicants who qualify for admission but do not desire to work toward a baccalaureate degree may be admitted as non-degree-seeking students. Applicants must submit transcripts and meet regular admission requirements.
Visiting Students
Visiting, non-degree-seeking, students who are taking classes to transfer immediately back to another institution may apply without submitting academic transcripts. These applicants must, in lieu of transcripts, submit official documentation from their home institution granting permission to take course work at Morgan State University for that particular semester.
Returning Students
Students returning to the University after a separation of one semester or more should contact the Office of Records and Registration for a readmission application and all corresponding information.
ADMISSION TO DEGREE PROGRAMS
Admission to the University does not constitute admission to particular degree programs. Students should contact individual departments or the Dean in the appropriate school/college for policies and procedures for admission to degree programs.
