Please select the outcome being assessed.

Given the rules of inheritance patterns, students will be able to correctly predict the expected genotype and phenotype ratios of offspring from a parental cross by completing problems on an exam, homework problems or laboratories.

Explain your plan for assessing this outcome.

The students participated in a lab which focused primarily on how to solve genetics problems. At the end of the lab each student was given several of these types of problems in order to review the specific procedures taught during the lab. From this review section I choose four questions which showed a progression in complexity from very simple to moderately complex. I graded each of the four questions and combined the results for each question for the entire lab section

What were the results of your assessment?

All the students in the lab were able to solve question #1 (100%). All but two students were able to answer question #2 (92%). All but three students were able to solve question #3 (87%). However, in regards to question #4, all but eight students were able to solve this particular question (67%).

Provide an analysis of the outcome assessment, including a plan for making any necessary future changes for the course.

The fact that all the students were able to answer question #1 shows me that they all understand the basic terminology necessary to solve a very simple genetics problem. The two students which missed question #2 just didn't complete the second part to the question. I think it was overlooked by the students. Question #3 included several parts to the answer, and again, I feel that some of the parts were just overlooked by the students which missed this particular problem. Question #4, however, was a more complex problem and was missed by many more students. Only 67% of the students in the lab were able to adequately answer this particular question. This problem was more complex because itrequired the students to be able to infer information based uponclues givenin the question.

Student Learning Objective Assessments

Given the rules of inheritance patterns, students will be able to correctly predict the expected genotype and phenotype ratios of offspring from a parental cross by completing problems on an exam, homework problems or laboratories

  1. In guinea pigs, black coat (B) is dominant over white (b). If a homozygous black animal is crossed with a white animal, what will be the appearance of their offspring? Give the genotypic and phenotypic ratios.
  1. In summer squash, white fruit (W) is dominant over yellow fruit (w). If a squash plant homozygous for white is crossed with one homozygous for yellow, what would be the phenotype of the offspring? Genotype?
  1. In eggplants, the gene for smooth fruit is dominant over the gene for hairy fruit. What two possible genotypes could represent a smooth fruit phenotype? What is the genotype of a hairy fruited eggplant? Using this information, cross a heterozygous plant with a homozygous recessive plant and give the genotypic and phenotypic ratios for the offspring.
  1. In humans, freckles are due to a recessive gene (n) while no freckles are a result of the dominant gene (N). A man with no freckles marries a freckled woman. They eventually have several children, some with freckles and others without. Show the expected phenotype and genotype of this couple's offspring.

Please indicate your program's overall response to this assessment.

We need to adjust and/or revise some aspect of this outcome and re-check it again.

Provide the department/area's brief action plan in response to this assessment. Include reference to what will be modified, by whom, and when. Identify extra resources needed.

This shows me that my basic procedure used to understand simple genetics problems works. However, in the futureI will spend more time and provided more practice questions similar to that of question #4 in order to hit my target of 70% competency in thelab involving these more complex problems.
