Assortment of oil paints **
Assortment of pigment sticks and/or oil bars
Powered pigment, pastel sticks (old), pan pastel, and/or powdered charcoal/graphite+
4” rubber brayer
Latex /nitrale gloves
Odorless solvent and container to hold it
Palette knives ****
Brushes (2 or 3) – old
12” X 16” palette paper or freezer paper
Squeegee or anything to move paint around. Old hotel keys, plastic coated cards work very well
1 to 2 rolls of paper towels or rags for cleanup – process messy
Painters tape to tape cradles
Anything to make impressions in the paint – tissue paper, wooden skewers, combs, wax paper, etc.. Plus I will have some of these items
Material specifics:
*Panels
Ampersand gesso board or clay board is recommended. If you prefer to make your own panels, they should have several coats of gesso.
Panels may or may not have a cradle. Cradles come in ¾ “, 1 ½” and 2” sizes. Uncradled pieces will need to be framed when finished.
Size and # of panels will depend on how quickly you work and your preference to size. You will be working on several panels at a time. The 12” X 12” is a good size to begin with. Two to three panels a day will give you plenty to work with.
**Oil paints - Bring a variety of transparent and opaque, lights and darks in your favorite colors. 12 – 16 colors minimum
***Dough scrapper – This is my primary tool. I use the MESSERMEISTER Silicone Bowl Scraper ($8.45) and Wilton Dough Scraper ($6.99). Both are available from Amazon. They are very smooth and flexible.
****Palette knives – I prefer a trowel style in a variety of sizes. Longer knives are good not only for mixing but also to apply and push the paint.

Figurative Sculpture with Found Objects
Beginning & All Levels – 2015/6-WS6
2 Day Workshop
Nov. 14, Sat. 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Nov. 15, Sun. 12:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Instructor: Melissa Manley
Wire - For sculpting and connecting things. I use black annealed iron wire, sometimes called stovepipe wire, or rebar wire. I keep at least three gauges such as 19ga, 24 ga, and 16ga and use them all the time. This black wire will rust! So if you don’t want that you’ll need copper or another type of wire. Aluminum is very soft, so if you use it you might want thicker gauges such as 16ga or thicker.
Wire tools- I usually keep an assortment but especially one pair each of a flat non-serrated pliers, flush cutters, heavy wire cutters, and round or chain nose pliers. These can be found at hardware stores or Harbor Freight Tools. They can be cheap ones. No need to go expensive, until you know which ones you use most.
Found objects – Anything that is reasonably small. Remember, these need to be table top sized figures. Rulers, folding rulers, broken doll parts, driftwood and twigs, pencils, old paintbrushes, dried cholla (I’ve actually seen this in the wood and shells of Hobby Lobby), the skies the limit! Just don’t make it too big you’ll never be able to finish and I work small. So if it’s taller than a foot you’re outta my expertise range and on your own! I have even purchased items to use in my work on Etsy.com and ebay.
Clay -For the head, and possibly the feet and hands. I use both Paperclay brand air dry clay. Keep in mind this will take a while to dry. I also like Sculpey or Fimo these are oven bake. So you’ll have to take that part home to bake. These clays are available locally at hobby stores.
Sculpting tools- These can be as simple as a bamboo skewer, toothpick, end of a paintbrush or a set of clay sculpting tools
Paint- You will probably want some acrylic paints and brushes or other application materials. I will bring acrylic craft paint to share but you may want your own.
Apron or old shirt
Optional:
Aves Apoxie sculpt, two part epoxy clay. This stuff is super cool! You can use it for joining something like a plastic dinosaur tail to a ruler! This you will probably have to order. I believe Amazon has it. I will bring some to demonstrate.
Gloves- I don’t normally use them but keep some on hand in case.
Wood Base- I have used inexpensive wood plaques purchased at hobby stores as bases for figures. I just paint or stain them.
Instructor will share:
Craft paints and brushes
Small hand saws and blades, if we need to saw things like pencils.
Some extra wire cutters and pliers
Extra black annealed wire
A small hand drill and Dremel and old wood to drill on top of along with some bits
(If you have one and don’t want to share you may want to bring it)
Clay sculpting tools
A variety of glues should we need it.
