Content: Welcome to Biology! Biology is the study of life ranging from the microscopic level of DNA, genes, and cells to the wide diversity of plant and animals that inhabit the planet. Our goal as a class will be to understand the complexities of the various hierarchies of life, as well as find the unifying patterns and functions that tie them together. Most importantly, biology is about asking questions and seeking answers to understand the world around us. There will be a cumulative end of course exam based on the Hawaii Content Standards for Biology. The textbook used for this course will be:

Modern Biology, Postlethwait and Hopson, 2012, Holt, Rinehart and Winston

Grading: A ten-point grading scale will be used for all assignments.

Materials: You will need a spiral notebook, folder with pockets, and something to write with. The notebook will be for lab/class notes and diagrams, the folder will be to hold graphic organizers and handouts for each lesson. You are expected to bring this everyday. All lab materials and supplies will be provided to you. An individual textbook will be assigned to you as well. ***There is a $10 lab fee to go towards the purchasing of lab materials and equipment. This is due AUGUST 17th. ***

Classroom Policies: Students are expected to enter the room, read the board, and be prepared for today’s lessons and activities. There will be a warm-up and directions on the board as you walk in. There are three classroom expectations: Be a part of a successful learning environment, respect yourself and others, and always follow all lab safety rules.

●  Late Work: All work is expected to be completed and turned in by the given deadline. Students that are absent should see me the day they return or check my website.

●  Low Test Grades: If a student is unsatisfied with the test grade they receive, they may retake the test (once) during study hall time. It is the student’s responsibility to coordinate the time and it must be completed within the same week the test was given. The higher of the two grades will be given.

●  Homework: Homework will be given on a weekly basis and the purpose is for practice and reinforcement. Therefore, homework will be graded on completion and spot checked for accuracy in class. Some units may lend themselves to more homework than others.

●  Lab Expectation: Lab groups will sign a contract in order to be a successful team. Unsafe use or purposeful damaging of lab equipment will not be tolerated. All lab safety rules should be followed.

●  Cell Phones: The use of phones during tests and instructional time is not allowed.
