Cornwall museums new website will be launched shortly; all museums will be sent login details during w/c 4th March.
Cornwall will be hosting a digital training event in late April/ early May as part of the same project which has delivered the website – the MDO team is co-ordinating this.
Also being led by the MDO team – the WW1 ‘100 stories’ project which is seeking to collect a wide range of stories from museums in Cornwall which help bring new insights into the impact of the First World War on ordinary people’s lives. Jo Mattingly is leading this project.
The MDO team has also been doing some work to help support volunteering in museums in Cornwall. This work has focussed on setting up work placements for students from Truro College and University College Falmouth. Any museums interested in hosting a placement should contact the MDO team.
The MDO team flagged up the opportunities for museums to get involved in a range of national initiatives including the Big Draw, Museums at Night and Kids in Museums.
The Conservation Development Officer offered museums the opportunity to participate in the joint purchasing scheme she has been running and explained that order forms for conservation supplies will be sent out soon via the MDO team.
Museums with Flags and Banners in their collections are invited to participate in a project which will help conserve these items – interested museums should contact the CDO, Helena Jaeschke asap.
Tamsin Daniel updated the group on the major capital projects happening in the heritage sector in Cornwall. Tate St Ives is awaiting the result of two substantial funding bids, results due in March. The Cornwall Record Office project is due to submit a second stage lottery bid in 2013. This project will deliver a range of facilities (including archive storage) which will benefit the wider heritage sector in Cornwall. The project to re-home the St Ives Archive in the Mariners Church in St Ives is not now happening.
A number of funding bids, supported by Cornwall Council, have been submitted on behalf of groups of museums in Cornwall. 2 have been successful to date:
HLF Our Heritage Grant to support innovative learning and interpretation of industrial heritage at Penlee, Geevor and East Pool
For Cornwall museum partnership – grant from ACE to support income generating activities
A bid for 4 museums in SE Cornwall to develop innovative audience development projects (Liskeard, Callington, Saltash and Mt Edgcumbe) is being developed. 2 Young Roots bids (one for a group of heritage orgs in Newlyn) and the other for museums in Bodmin, Truro and Perranzabuloe to work with local schools are also in development.
The For Cornwall museum partnership (NMMC, RCM, PTM, FAG, Penlee) has submitted a bid on behalf of the sector to the Arts Council for a range of measures to promote sustainability in museums in Cornwall. The result of this bid will be announced at the end of March 2013.
A bid to the HLF Catalyst Fund to build capacity in fundraising in museums is being submitted in March 2013. This bid will have a strong focus on building skills and capacity at a senior level in museums to implement successful fundraising campaigns, with a particular focus on individual donations/ major donor giving. This training will target museum leaders and museum Boards.

Diversify Your Income training will run on 18th March at RCM
AIM is running a session at NMMC on 20 March on Sustainability with Judy Niner
The MDO team has identified the training needs in Cornwall as:
Emergency planning, MODES training and labelling and marking.
In Cornwall the MDO team will be delivering 2 days relating to learning (one hopefully with RIO) and a digital good practice day which hopefully will be in April/May.
Tamsin Daniel (Cornwall Council) has offered to deliver project managing training (larger or capital bids which would include working with architects, surveyors etc.). The offer is to Cornwall but would have wider appeal and a small amount of extra funding would bring in some of the professional people to talk from their perspective.

Cornwall is keen to submit a bid to HLF Catalyst which includes a partnership with the SWFED who would be commissioned, as part of the project, to deliver the training for museum leaders and Board members. We see this as a pilot project – tested in Cornwall first – which could then be rolled out to the wider region. We will need confirmation from the Fed that they are keen to partner in this project before 22nd March when a final draft of the bid is due to be completed.
