DE PERE FIRE RESCUE

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

OPEN HOUSE

DATE: Saturday, October 10, 2009

PLACE: De Pere Fire Station #1, 400 Lewis St., De Pere

TIME: 10am to 1pm

De Pere Fire Rescue commemorates National Fire Prevention week remembering October 9, 1871 fires that destroyed the City of Chicago and most of Northeast Wisconsin. This year Fire Prevention Week is October 4-10, 2009. This year's theme is “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned!” the goal is to increase our citizens' awareness to the fact that 80% of fatalities occur in the residential setting.

Open house will have stove top fire extinguisher demonstrations. Children will learn 'stop, drop, and roll', 'crawl low under smoke', and more. There are games, and tours of the fire station. All fire department apparatus and equipment will be on display. Children can use a real fire hose to knock down a (simulated) fire. Prizes up to and including a ride in the aerial 100' up to a lucky winner. Blood pressure checks will be available and Brown County Dispatch will be giving 'true' to life lessons on a 9-1-1 simulator. Also assisting are local Boy Scout troops, Aurora Clinic, and De Pere Citizens Academy Alumni Association.

The event usually draws around a thousand people, more on a nice day. Adults seem more interested in the displays; children just want to play the games. Everyone leaves with some prizes and an increased awareness of fire safety. The children are always very excited and make for some great photo opportunities.

De Pere Fire Rescue will also complete visits to every school in the city, assisting by teaching the fire safety message to all Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third graders over the four weeks proceeding the open house. We have made arrangements for local news media, in the past, to attend these classroom visits.

PLEASE CALL Assistant Fire Chief Jim Stupka at 920-339-4090 with any questions.

THANK YOU.
